Last week a new documentary film called “You Own Alaska!” had it’s premiere at the Anchorage Museum in Alaska.  The filmmakers include John Hendrickson and two-time Governor of Alaska and former Secretary of the Interior Walter J. Hickel.

The film helps to explain Alsaka’s unique “Owner State” whic was born when the state wrote its model constitution and won the fight for statehood 50 years ago.

The film tells how Alaskans insisted when they became a state that they receive at least 100 million acres of land so they could pay their own way. Most Alaskans don’t pay state income or sales taxes because the state budget is funded by revenues from the state-owned oil at the North Slope and most Alaskans qualify for an annual dividend from the Permanent Fund.

Writer/director Marla Williams interviewed Byron Mallott, Gloria O’Neill and Harold Napoleon, who spell out the core values of Alaska’s Native peoples and their vision for the future, and she interviewed Gov. Sarah Palin, who attended and spoke at last week’s premiere.

Spread is a fresh, funny, and racy look at the trials and tribulations of sleeping your way to a life of privilege in Los Angeles.  Comic and karmic, the film is an “immorality tale” about a gorgeous guy who gives women what they want in order to live exactly as he likes.

In Spread, Nikki (Ashton Kutcher) isn’t a gigolo.  He’s a sexual grifter, a fun-loving, freeloading hipster who understands his greatest assets are his looks and sexual prowess, which he uses to charm his way into the hearts of the city’s richest women and enjoy their lifestyle.  Nikki gets a free place to live, fantastic gifts, A-list access, and plenty of sex.  The women get to feel young, beautiful… and utterly fulfilled in the bedroom.  It’s a mutually beneficial set-up.

Nikki’s latest conquest is Samantha (Anne Heche), a stunning middle-aged lawyer who gives him more than he’s ever had before.  But then he meets a gorgeous waitress his own age named Heather (Margarita Levieva).  She comes to visit Nikki at Samantha’s house while Samantha is out of town, sees what an incredible place it is… and comes to the mistaken conclusion it’s his.  Unbeknownst to Nikki, Heather lives by playing the same game.

When Samantha comes home, she discovers Nikki’s infidelity and he’s put out on the street.  With nowhere else to turn, Nikki pulls out all the stops to win Heather over and they begin to form their own kind of bond.  Sexually charged by a game of one-upsmanship, each shows the other their best grifts, and they unexpectedly begin falling in love – the one thing they can’t do in the life they lead.  Soon, the truth of their unfolding relationship forces a choice between love and money, and Nikki has to decide whether he can live on his own once and for all in the hopes of finding something real.

IFC Films to Distribute “Unmade Beds” From This Year’s Sundance Film Festival

IFC Films has acquired U.S. distribution rights to Alexis Dos Santo’s romantic drama “Unmade Beds,” which premiered earlier this year at Sundance Film Festival. [via]

With his startlingly visceral and original second feature, Unmade Beds, Alexis Dos Santos manifests an exuberant London where unbridled longing and zeal plunge nubile expats into lusty adventures and momentous encounters. When wide-eyed Spaniard Axl comes to London on a quest for the father who abandoned him, he lands in the middle of a creative hotbed-an underground polyglot squat filled with colorful free spirits. Among them is Vera, a beautiful Belgian girl recently dumped by her boyfriend, who seeks to restore her faith in romantic destiny after meeting a charismatic stranger. As Axl and Vera separately pursue these bittersweet and elusive connections, they circle each other’s orbits-their fates almost inevitably intertwined.Alongside this lush story of youthful awakening, Dos Santos conjures a rhythmic stream-of-consciousness mood collage. Axl and Vera’s world vibrates with visual and sonic energy. The palate of yellows, reds, and greens emits benevolent warmth as if to soften the blow of their tender aches. Surprising sound scapes and an effusive score aptly express the characters’ mercurial interior states. Meanwhile slapstick moments and musical performances by fresh unknowns puncture the melancholy, buoying the film into irreverent whimsy. They may be slightly crumpled works in progress-like the unmade beds where they slumber-but Axl, Vera, and their friends are as vital as a crisp new day. [via]
