New York City former mayor, Ed Koch is reportedly upset over the new documentary, “Outrage” now playing in the Tribeca Film Festival. The former mayor is outraged– not because it claims he had “a well-established affair with a man he subsequently ran out of town,” as Variety reported, but because it claims “his record on AIDS and gay rights was virtually nonexistent,”reports the NYPost. Koch is proud of his record on AIDS and gay rights and accuses filmmaker Kirby Dick — a proponent of outing closeted politicians — of revising history.

“Outrage” from Academy Award®-nominated documentary filmmaker Kirby Dick (This Film is Not Yet Rated) is a searing indictment of the hypocrisy of closeted politicians who actively campaign against the LGBT community they covertly belong to. Boldly revealing the hidden lives of some of the United States’ most powerful policymakers, Outrage takes a comprehensive look at the harm they’ve inflicted on keeping their secrets. On the Salem Film Festival’s opening night, as more than 200 movie lovers were talking movies and eating hors d’oeuvres inside the Salem Cinema, someone slipped away with the 25-foot-long rented carpet, rented to give the event a more Hollywood feel.

Security tapes show a youngish-looking guy walking toward the theater and then, whoosh, the carpet disappearing.

The perpetrator is still at large, but the festival was able to raise donations to help pay the $300 replacement cost. [via]

Hang on to your hats: things are going to get a little bumpy at the 48th International Critics’ Week (May 14-22) at Cannes. That’s because acclaimed Winnipeg, Canada animator Cordell Barker – the man who gave us such animated gems as The Cat Came Back – is back with Runaway, his latest creation. A train wreck of a movie in the finest and funniest sense of the term, Runaway will have its World Premiere during this prestigious one-week event.

What would happen if the world were a driverless train thundering recklessly over bumpy tracks? With his third short film, Runaway (www.nfb.ca/runaway), two-time Oscar nominee Cordell Barker provides a caustic answer to this philosophical question.

runaway3

Fast-paced, colourful and a joy to watch, Runaway shows us happy passengers having a great time on a crowded train, oblivious to the fate that awaits them around the bend. After a breakdown, a class struggle ensues that is as amusing as it is merciless – with everyone equal in the end. Runaway takes audiences on a journey that is as funny as it is disastrous, set to the infectious music of Benoît Charest, composer for The Triplets of Belleville. This 9-minute short is produced by Derek Mazur out of the NFB Prairie Centre in Winnipeg.

International Critics’ Week is a parallel section of the Cannes Film Festival that features short films alongside feature works by first- or second-time filmmakers.

Did Kobe Bryant called the shots on the Spike Lee documentary?

kobe_doin_work

Right before the taping of “Kobe: Doin’ Work” Kobe Bryant demanded creative control over the documentary and forcing the director, Spike Lee, to drive to his house to beg for a meeting to save the project, sources told Page Six.

Lee had worked for months to get permission from Bryant, the Lakers team, coach Phil Jackson, the NBA and ESPN, which will air the day-in-the-life documentary on May 16.But suddenly Bryant said he wouldn’t cooperate unless he was granted creative control.

It reportedly went so far that Lee had a last-minute plan to substitute Spurs star Tim Duncan for Kobe.

But Kobe and Spike somehow worked it out, and Lee is now busy promoting the documentary film which screened Saturday night at the Tribeca Film Festival.

A spokesman for Lee claimed he retained creative control and called the story of the dispute “completely baseless.”
