“Ajami” tops “Lebanon” to win best picture at Israeli Oscars

“Ajami”, Yaron Shani and Scandar Copti’s debut film, beat out “Lebanon” to win the top prize for best picture at the Ophir Award ceremony, granted by the Israeli Academy of Film and Television which were held Saturday evening.

“Ajami,”  a powerful crime drama set on the mean streets of the occupied territories, also won the awards for best director, best editor, best script and original music.

Gentlemen Broncos, the latest comedy from director Jared Hess (Napoleon Dynamite) had its world premiere over the weekend at Fantastic Fest.

In the film, Benjamin (Michael Angarano), home-schooled by his eccentric mother (Jennifer Coolidge), is a loveable loner whose passion for writing leads him on an offbeat and hilarious journey as his story first gets ripped off by the legendary fantasy novelist, Ronald Chevalier (Jemaine Clement) and then is adapted into a disastrous movie by the small town’s most prolific homespun filmmaker.

Hurricance Ike documentary accepted in Great Lakes Independent Film Festival

The documentary “Ike: A Documentary — The Story of a Torn City Rebuilt by Everyday Heroes” produced by 15 Texan high school students has been accepted as an entry in the Great Lakes Independent Film Festival in Erie, Pa., where it has also been nominated for best documentary feature.

This the second U.S. film festival, as the documentary will screen at the Independents’ Film Festival in Tampa, Fla., in November.

The Secrets of Jonathan Sperryposter

The faith-based Christian film, “The Secrets of Jonathan Sperry,” from director Rich Christiano, is currently playing in limited release.

The movie stars “The Love Boat” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” Gavin MacLeod with, Robert Guillaume of “Benson” fame as his neighbor, and Jansen Panettiere, younger brother of Hayden Panettiere of “Heroes” fame, as a boy who strikes up a relationship with them.

Director Roman Polanski arrested in Zurich

Film director Roman Polanski was arrested late Saturday as he arrived at the Zurich airport in Switzerland for the Zurich Film Festival. Polanski was arrested on a 31 year old U.S. arrest warrant, paving the way for his possible extradition to the United States.

The Polish-born director fled the United States in 1978, a year after pleading guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl.  The victim in the case, Samantha Geimer, has since publicly identified herself and expressed forgiveness for Mr. Polanski.

Former Days of Our Lives star Austin Peck, has a starring role in the new independent film, The Bluetooth Virgin, which opens at select theaters in New York and Los Angeles yesterday Friday, September 25.

In the film, which was written, produced, and directed by Russell Brown, Austin portrays an aspiring screenwriter named Sam. The film also stars Bryce Johnson, Tom Gilroy, Roma Maffia, and Lauren Stamile.

Judge dismisses Weinstein Co. “Precious” lawsuit

A federal judge has dismissed a breach-of-contract case filed by the Weinstein Co. against the producers of “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” ruling that TWC’s lawsuit failed to state a valid legal claim that it was entitled to distribute the award-winning movie.
