Director Roman Polanski arrested in Zurich

Film director Roman Polanski was arrested late Saturday as he arrived at the Zurich airport in Switzerland for the Zurich Film Festival. Polanski was arrested on a 31 year old U.S. arrest warrant, paving the way for his possible extradition to the United States.
The Polish-born director fled the United States in 1978, a year after pleading guilty to unlawful sexual intercourse with a 13-year-old girl. The victim in the case, Samantha Geimer, has since publicly identified herself and expressed forgiveness for Mr. Polanski.
The 76-year-old director of films “Chinatown,” “Rosemary’s Baby” “Knife in the Water,” and“Repulsion” has lived for the past three decades in France. He received a directing Oscar for the 2002 movie “The Pianist.”
Mr. Polanski’s arrest could affect the release of his latest film “The Ghost.” The film, scheduled for release in 2010, is still in postproduction.
