New Italian Cinema, presented by the San Francisco Film Society, the Italian Cultural Institute of San Francisco and New Italian Cinema Events of Florence, Italy, wrapped up an eight-day run dedicated to celebrating the rich cinematic tradition of Italy and bringing the country’s newest directors and films to audiences in San Francisco. Director Donatella Maiorca was on hand to accept the NICE City of Florence Award for her film Sea Purple (Viola di mare).

Filmmaker Aaron Putnam of Asheville, North Carolina had his short film Strigoii, screened as an official entry at the Sitges International Film Festival of Catalonia, held on the Costa Brava south of Barcelona. Sitges is considered the most important festival for fantasy, science fiction and horror films.
Putnam’s film, “Strigoii,” is about a town attacked nightly by a fierce creature and three people who must decide whether to let a friend who is trapped outside into their house.

The San Francisco Film Society announced the appointment of Jennifer Chaiken and Todd Traina to its board of directors.
“We are immensely pleased to add the considerable talents and expertise of Jennifer Chaiken and Todd Traina to our board as the Film Society continues to expand,” said Pat McBaine, president of the Film Society’s board of directors. “They bring the fresh perspective of youth and filmmaker expertise to the SFFS board and will certainly contribute greatly to our increasing efforts to bring visionary and progressive programming to Bay Area audiences and valuable services to filmmakers nationwide.”

Dr. Michael Harris from SF Voice for Israel speaks at Rachel
Five Jewish board members of the San Francisco Jewish Film Festival resigned last week. Nancy Goldberg, Iris Metz, Shana Penn, Zehava Itelman and Noa Eliasaf-Shoham submiited resignation letters following an open letter from the festival addressing concerns about its handling of the July screening of the controversial film “Rachel” and invitation to Rachel Corrie’s mother to speak at the event. Rachel Corrie died in 2005 while protesting the Israeli presence in Gaza.

Amy McClung’s indie religious fantasy “Change of Life,” is building big buzz on the film festival circuit. The film has screened at the Great Lakes Independent Film Festival (where it was named best film with a religious/spiritual theme), the L.A. Femme Film Festival, the International Film Festival South Africa, the Swansea Bay Film Festival in Swansea, Wales, and the Thailand International Film Festival in Phuket, Thailand.

Actress Mo’Nique was again a no-show at the New York Film Festival screening of “Precious” where it received a rare standing ovation. According to reports, after promising to attend the festival premiere of ‘Precious,’ Mo’Nique decided she was not being paid enough to attend.
Last night the excuse given was that it was the birthday of her toddler twins. Her publicist Tresa Sanders reportedly quit right after announcing her client wouldn’t be making it to the film festival.

Awarded 1st prize for Best Feature by the Rhode Island International Film Festival, the film co-stars Hollywood veterans David Ogden Stiers and Seymour Cassel. The Oregon-made film will next open the Baltimore Women’s Film Festival, October 23rd.
