“Samson and Delilah” winner of this year’s Cannes Film Festival Camera D’or award, won big at Inside Film Awards – the “people’s choice” awards of Australian film.   “Samson and Delilah” the Aboriginal teenage love story, took home six awards, including best feature, best actor and best actress.

New Italian Cinema, presented by the San Francisco Film Society, the Italian Cultural Institute of San Francisco and New Italian Cinema Events of Florence, Italy, wrapped up an eight-day run dedicated to celebrating the rich cinematic tradition of Italy and bringing the country’s newest directors and films to audiences in San Francisco. Director Donatella Maiorca was on hand to accept the NICE City of Florence Award for her film Sea Purple (Viola di mare).

Paal Refsdal

Norwegian freelance journalist Paal Refsdal, kidnapped a week ago in eastern Afghanistan was released Thursday along with his Afghan interpreter, the AP reported.  Refsdal was in Afghanistan filming a documentary for a Norwegian production company with funding from the Norwegian Film Institute.

The nominations and jury members for the twelfth annual British Independent Film Awards (BIFAs) were announced yesterday in London.  The film receiving the most nods is Fish Tank with eight nominations. Moon follows with seven nominations. An Education, In The Loop and Nowhere Boy each receive six nominations and Bright Star receives four. Other films with multiple nominations are Katalin Varga receiving three, and Bronson and Bunny & The Bull receiving two nominations each.

“Ay Ayeng” and “Baler” were the top winners at the 57th Filipino Academy of Movie Arts and Sciences (FAMAS) ceremony.

“Ay Ayeng,” a film about two friends who returned to the Cordilleras to help deliver their families and the community from poverty, won five major awards, including, Best Director for Ed Palmos, Best Actress for Heart Evangelista, Best Child Actress for Jessica Mae Flores, Best Child Actor for Dominico Soriano, and Best Special Effects for Rolando Salem.

The premiere of the movie “Barbarian Princess” will double as the opening event  at the Hawaii International Film Festival which kicks off tonight. And the film finds itself in the middle of a controversy created by the Hawaiian actress who plays the princess. The actress Q’orianka Kilcher grew up in the islands and is not comfortable with the title of the film.

Erez Tadmor and Sharon Maymon’s Israeli comedy “A Matter of Size” is headed to US and Canada, thanks to Neil Friedman’s Menemsha Films.

The movie tells the story of an overweight Israeli chef who mutinies from the rigors of his diet support group to set up Israel’s first sumo wrestling team.

Winner of 2009 Lola (German Film Award for Best Documentary), and a contender for 2009 Academy Award selection for Best Documentary, “Nobody’s Perfect” will have its US theatrical release by Lorber Films in December 2009 / January 2010.

Filmmaker Niko von Glasow, whose short arms identify him as a grown-up “child of Thalidomide”, documents in this film his search for eleven other people affected by Thalidomide, to join him in posing naked for a book of photographs. With humour and a surprising lightness of touch, “Nobody’s Perfect” is a portrait of twelve extraordinary characters, from childhood to today. These are people who have gotten used to furtive glances from passers-by, but now they have to stand completely unprotected in front of a camera, and look at their own bodies in a new light.
