As the Bollywood strike enters its seventh week, its expected that there won’t be a single major release at least till the 1st week of July. This means that movies like Kaminey, New York, Love AAJ Kal, Jashnn, Kambakkth Ishq, Life Partner and Shortkut – The Con Is On, all of which were otherwise schedule to be released in the first half of 2009, would now have to release in July or later.

In the U.S., the Eagle Theater in Jackson Heights, Queens, New York, that specializes in first-run Bollywood movies has temporarily closed because of the Bollywood strike. The 500-seat Eagle is in an ethnically Indian neighborhood and is expected to reopen as soon as the strike in India ends.

The Bollywood strike continues after producers and multiplex cinema owners failed to reach agreement over box office revenue sharing agreement. Producers argue that they deserve an equal share of takings, instead of the traditional 60-40 split in favour of multiplex owners.

Bollywood actor Anupam Kher hosted the premiere of his debut film, ‘Saaransh’ in Mumbai, 25 years after it was completed.  In 1984, the premiere of ‘Saaransh’ had to be postponed because of riots in Bhiwandi. He was just 28 at the time.

In ‘Saaransh’, Anupam played the role of a retired school principal who had lost interest in life after his son’s death abroad and has to fight to get back his son’s ashes. He later fights for his tenant’s rights too, taking on powerful politicians.

The film was also India’s official entry to the Oscars in 1985 in the best foreign language film category.

Anupam Kher also received the news from his agent that he will be joining the cast of the new Woody Allen’s un-named film, to be shot in London later this year. Kher joins an international cast that includes Spaniard Antonio Banderas, India’s Freida Pinto, British-Australian Naomi Watts, American Josh Brolin and Brit Anthony Hopkins. Nicole Kidman recently dropped out of the film.

“Kambakth Ishq” is a Bollywood movie in production starring Akshay Kumar and Kareena Kapoor in pivotal roles along with Aftab Shivdasani and Amrita Arora.

The movie is set in Los Angeles where Akshay Kumar plays Viraj, a successful stuntman who does stunt doubles for Hollywood actors and Kareena Kapoor plays Simrita a model. Viraj is a chauvinist who thinks commitment and marriage are words that should not exist in the dictionary. He gets big bucks for doing what heroes can’t do and lives a lavish life. Simrita is a ruthless feminist who thinks men are losers and have no place in her life. Life experiences have taught her that men are not worth the effort.

The movie explores the relationship of these two characters who no matter how many times unexpectedly bump into each just bicker and fight. Life takes an unexpected turn when they meet each other at a friends wedding to which both are opposed.

If You Liked Slumdog…

So it turns out that, before the success of Slumdog Millionaire, the last and only time an Indian won an Oscar was for costume design on Gandhi.  That film, a biopic of the most significant figure in Indian national history, starred and was directed by Englishmen.  If the situation were reversed, I don’t know which part of the whole business I’d like less: the lack of American representation in the trendsetting Indian awards, or the fact that they made a movie about George Washington and only let us design the costumes.

But in the spirit of overcoming past grievances and my own ignorance, let’s take a look at some of the best Indian films of the last year.  (I’ll even tastelessly provide an analogous American movie to make it more palatable.)  Who knows? Maybe Slumdog is just the tip of an iceberg that rarely surfaces in these parts.

Mumbai My Life

A hyperlink-style drama centered on the 2006 Mumbai train bombings, a terrorist attack that killed or injured almost a thousand people.  As we found out despite ourselves with United 93, national tragedy can make for rousing filmmaking, and this cinematic tribute to the spirit of Mumbai might just be the real deal.

A Wednesday

This crime thriller seems to be cut from Michael Mann-ish cloth, but it looks well-tailored.  Plus it features two grizzled stars of Bollywood together again, like De Niro and Pacino in Righteous Kill.  It might not have been worth it, but it’s still pretty eye-catching.

200px-rock_on_poster

Rock On!!

The Big Chill meets The Commitments’ is probably the most soulless and accurate way I can describe this Bollywood experiment with the rock musical.  Dripping with good nature and nostalgia, this was one of the biggest Hindi-language crowd-pleasers of 2008.

firaaq

In Such Times

An ensemble film set during the 2002 Gujarat riots, this drama marks the directorial debut of popular actress Nandita Das, who you may or may not have seen in Deepha Mehta’s elements trilogy.  Her movie’s brand new, but it’s doing very well on the festival circuit, so it may be one to watch.

200px-mahadevkasajjanpur

Welcome to Sajjanpur

Here’s an interesting tidbit: in India, independent cinema is called parallel cinema.  And one of the pioneers of parallel cinema directed this movie, a light comedy geared towards a mass audience.  Who can resist Bollywood’s many charms?

200px-tahaan_poster

Tahaan

A story about a boy who almost became a terrorist and the donkey who loved him.  It’s probably better than it sounds.

200px-ghajini_hindi

Ghajini

Memento with a scarier-looking dude.  Also Bollywood’s most profitable film of all time—and actually a remake of a remake of Christopher Nolan’s thrilling and chilling breakout film.

200px-jaanetuyajaanena

Whether You Know Or Not

Another crowd-pleaser—over a billion citizens makes for a lot of crowds to please, I guess—with the right mix of music, romance, and plot-cribbing from Hollywood movies.  It’s When Harry Met Sally and Forget Paris packaged with Bollywood showmanship for the youth market.  ‘What’s not to like?’ is probably a better question here than ‘What’s to like?’

200px-singhisking

Singh is Kinng

That’s right, two n’s.  Bollywood producers take the advice of numerologists and add extra letters to their titles for good luck.  What good luck?  Why, the good luck afforded by overspelling your film’s title, of course.  Don’t let the cultural divide get in the way of simple logic.  Besides, the movie was a smash hit, so they’ve got to be doing something right.

200px-jodhaaakbar_poster

Jodhaa-Akbar

An extravagant historical epic that wears its production budget like a medal of honor, this is the kind of event movie that Asia seems to produce on a yearly basis.  Remember MongolHero?  Something with cherry blossoms and flying swordfights in an ancient historical setting?  That’s how this one rolls, but with a healthy dose of Tristan and Isolde.

‘Ghajini’ to Open Big Outside of India

Posted by editor@vimooz.com on December 22, 2008 under Bollywood, Foreign Film | Comments are off for this article

In an unprecedented manner for a Bollywood title, the Aamir Khan starrer ‘Ghajini’, written and directed by the acclaimed A.R. Murugadoss, will add a further 22 countries to its huge India release pattern on December 25th. Orchestrated by BIG Pictures, the motion pictures brand of Reliance BIG Entertainment Ltd, the widely anticipated remake will premiere day and date in over 300 cinemas. The original Tamil language film was a box office and critical success, garnering the Best Actress Award for Asin Thottumkal at the South India Filmfare Awards, who also stars in the remake.

‘Ghajini’ features amazing new music from Golden Globe(R) nominee (Best Original Score – ‘Slumdog Millionaire’) and Andrew Lloyd Webber collaborator A.R. Rahman, with lyrics by Prasoon Joshi.

“‘Ghajini’ is by far the most awaited film of 2008. With the storyline revolving around short term memory loss, with all the excitement and intrigue imaginable, we are hopeful of meeting the audiences’ expectation this holiday season. We are confident of the team at BIG Pictures and have completely backed their vision for promoting the film overseas,” said producers Madhu Mantena and Tagore Madhu.

Ghajini was reportedly inspired by psychological thriller Memento directed by Christopher Nolan.

Sanjay (Aamir Khan) suffers from a short term memory loss and he can remember things for only 15 minutes. So, information he finds useful is tattooed on his body.

Chitra is a student, who needs to find an interesting patient for her college project. When Chitra locates Sanjay, she finds about his love life with Kalpana (an actress / model) from his personal diary. She also finds about who Sanjay really is, how he is in this current state and that he is looking for the person who is responsible for this situation.

Chitra wants to help him in any possible way and also find out the missing clues in the story, as well as what happened to Kalpana. [via]
