Valentino: The Last Emperor

valentino9

Shown around the world in film festivals to wide acclaim, VALENTINO THE LAST EMPEROR is a feature film that has captured the hearts and imaginations of audiences. It is a behind-the-scenes look at the world of fashion, featuring access never-before allowed in the high temples of Haute Couture. The legendary Valentino is the star of the film, along with his longtime business partner, Giancarlo Giammetti. VALENTINO THE LAST EMPEROR follows them for the final two years of their careers, and show the struggles the two men face as they confront the final act of a nearly 50-year career at the top of the world’s most glamorous and competitive game. The struggle of art against commerce is at the center of the film. In the end, however, the story proves to be not one about money or expensive clothes, but about love.

The New Twenty

The film charts the lives of five New Yorkers, a mix of gay and straight best friends about to turn thirty. With emotionally vivid performances and nuanced characters, THE NEW TWENTY paints the portrait of a generation living the highs and lows of a Wall Street world destined to disappear overnight.

The year is 2006 and prosperity seems unending: two of the five are investment bankers, another works in advertising, another does freelance database design, and only one of the five might be called a slacker. But they all suffer from, as loner Felix puts it, “a touch of existential malaise courtesy of late capitalism. You know, the usual.” So if money isn’t the root of their discontent, what is? Whatever they’re searching for – love, meaning in work – they won’t find it in each other. On TV, friendship lasts forever. In real life, not so much.

Hunger

At its simplest, Hunger is the story of Bobby Sands. The 27-year-old Irish Republican Army volunteer died in 1981 while on a hunger strike aimed towards getting him and other Irish Republican inmates’ status as political prisoners. In actuality, however, this film is about much more and much less. We do learn a bit about Sands’ life, but the major focus isn’t on the history of these men, nor does it focus on the politics surrounding them. Hunger is about the simple act of life in this situation, and the strength of conviction that these men had.

The Edge Of Love

A beautifully-drawn love story, the film revolves around two feisty, free-spirited women, Caitlin Thomas (Miller) and Vera Killick (Knightley); Vera’s husband, William Killick (Murphy); and the brilliant, charismatic poet Dylan Thomas (Rhys) who loves both women. Broken promises, passion, betrayal, the shadow of war and the constant threat of imminent death push the protagonists to “The Edge of Love.” The story explores the bohemian underworld of war-torn London and the intimate complexities of two young couples whose lives and loves become dangerously intertwined.

VALENTINO THE LAST EMPEROR is a feature-length film on the legendary designer Valentino Garavani in the wake of his exit in 2008 from the company he founded in Rome more than 45 years ago. Produced and directed by Matt Tyrnauer, Special Correspondent for Vanity Fair magazine, the film is an intimate, engaging and very funny fly-on-the-wall exploration of the singular world of one of Italy’s richest and most famous men. The film documents the colorful and dramatic closing act of Valentino’s celebrated career, tells the story of his extraordinary life and work, and also explores the larger themes affecting the fashion business today. But at the heart of the film is the unique relationship between Valentino and his business partner and companion of 50 years, Giancarlo Giammetti.
