The 9th edition of the New York International Latino Film Festival (NYILFF) concluded with some of the most exciting films in cinema, indelible red carpets events and remarkable attendance records this year. NYILFF announced the winners of its festival awards at its Closing Night ceremony on Sunday, July 27, at El Morocco (3534 Broadway, Bronx, NY). Awards were given out in four categories, and the winners were as follows:

BEST PICTURE AWARD:
Vicious Circle
Director Paul Boyd was the recipient of the Best Picture Award, presented by HBO, for his narrative feature, Vicious Circle—a tragic punk rock Latino love story, starring Paul Rodriguez, Jr. and Emily Rios, delivering the tales of a raw, edgy, teenage Romeo and Juliet with a murder mystery twist. Producer Angelina Boyd, who accepted on behalf of Paul Boyd, was presented with a prize of $2,500 provided by HBO and $500.00 in Kodak Motion Picture film stock.

BEST DOCUMENTARY AWARD:
Transvestites Also Cry | La Americana
In an unexpected tie, NYILFF honored both Transvestites Also Cry and La Americana for Best Documentary. Directed by Sebastiano d’Ayala Valva, Transvestites Also Cry which tells the story of two Ecuadorian transsexuals who work as prostitutes in Paris, demonstrates how life is often a precarious balance between willful optimism and a quiet fatalism. The second winning documentary, La Americana, is an unforgettable story woven into the current immigration debate in the United States, putting a human face on this timely and controversial issue. This film was directed by Nicholas Bruckman and John Mattiuzzi.

BEST SHORT AWARD:
Rojo Red
First-time filmmaker Juan Manuel Betancourt received the award for Best Short for Rojo Red, a tale of a young boy who pulls apart the threads of reality in this brilliantly imaginative Colombian short that fuses live action, stop-motion and 3D animation. Betancourt, d’Ayala Valva and Bruckman/Mattiuzzi all received an Avid DV Pro System and $500.00 in Kodak Motion Picture Stock.

Heineken Red Star Award

Malta Con Huevo
The Heineken Red Star Award was presented to a director whose film pushes the boundaries of creativity, providing a unique vision and execution. Cristobal Valderrama won the prize for his direction of Malta Con Huevo, a twisting story of two mismatched friends who decide to move in together, resulting in unintended, truly far-reaching consequences. This film’s innovative storyline is a testament to the type of thought provoking films the Heineken Red Star Award recognizes. Heineken has partnered with Variety Magazine and the Independent Film Channel (IFC) to bring well-deserved publicity and visibility to the Heineken Red Star Award recipients and their films. Valderamma received a crystal statuette created by Tiffany and Co., a two-page spread in Variety, and a trip to Los Angeles to meet with executives and network with other winners from the Red Star Award Program.

Bangkok film festival to go on despite scandal

Posted by editor@vimooz.com on under Bangkok International Film Festival | Be the First to Comment

The sixth Bangkok International Film Festival will go ahead in the Thai capital in September, organizers announced Tuesday, despite becoming embroiled in a US corruption scandal last year.

Rumors had swirled that the festival would take a break this year after a Los Angeles-based couple were arrested in the United States in December for allegedly paying 1.7 million dollars in bribes to a Thai government official for the right to manage the 2003 festival.

A former Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) governor was forced to withdraw her candidacy from Thailand’s general elections in December because of her alleged links to the scandal.

The 2008 festival will run from September 23 to 30

Big Red Productions, Inc is stoked to announce the winners of the 2008 festival, which took place at the Huntington Beach Art Center during the US Open of Surfing July 25-27th Presented by Toyota of Huntington Beach and Dibs Brand Bite Sized Snacks.

The week was started off by the Roasting Tribute to the voice of surf; Rick “Rockin’ Fig Fignetti” at Luggatti’s restaurant. Moderated by Peter “PT” Townend, this night was full of laughs and insider stories from Fig’s best friends and family. The Roast is posted on You Tube by CalSurf Pix, search: Fig Roast to see all the action.

The Huntington Beach Surf Theatre Film Festival is devoted to showcasing a wide range of surf films to the public. Though most surf films would be bundled into the “documentary” category, we know that surfers are specialists; they are longboarders, short-boarders, classic old-schoolers, new school aerialists, big wave chargers, stand up paddlers, world explorers and humanitarians. These people have a commitment to the ocean and surfing and have done their part to capture it on film. We are proud to bring the surfer, the filmmaker and their fans together at Surf Theatre.

The winners are:
Best Corpo Video: Rip Curl for SomeWhere
Best Independent Video: Under the Sun by Cyrus Sutton
Most Innovative Video: New Emissions of Light and Sound by Globe
Best Cinematography: Quest by DeepWater Films
Best Hardcore Video: The Skills 2 Pay The Bills by Jessie Marley

“This year, the competition was high- all of the companies have raised the bar in surf video production;” Dave Carlos of Big Red Productions stated, ” Quality, action and editing made this a really tight race.”

The real winner of the weekend festival was the Long Beach Veterans Orthotics and Prosthetics Lab, the recipient of proceeds from the sold out private screening of Between the Lines, a film by Scott Bass, Ty Ponder and Troy Page which portrayed 2 surfers during the Vietnam War, Brant Page and Pat Farley.
