AFM International Independent Film Festival | !f Istanbul Opens With “Man on Wire”

man-on-wire2

!f İstanbul launched its 2009 edition last night with a Gala Opening at Istanbul’s Emek Cinema, screening the Turkish premiere of the Oscar-nominated “Man on Wire.” Instead of a classic opening act, in keeping with its “Do it Yourself” spirit this year, the festival organised a flash mob guerrilla dance show. To the sounds of Michael Jackson’s Thriller, seemingly random members of the audience stood up -some professional dancers, others, total amateurs- and began dancing, culminating in an ensemble Vogue, performed in the front of the cinema hall.

Through Feb. 22 the festival will screen around 70 international movies in four locations across Istanbul, then it will go to Ankara, where it will screen films from Feb. 26 to March 1.

Roma Independent Film Festival

Cinema-goers and film fans around the world are likely to be counting down to Roma Independent Film Festival, which takes place in the Italian capital next month.

Described by its organisers as Rome’s first independent and international film festival, the event lasts a total of seven days and aims to celebrate the best in new European and international independent movies.

“As well as offering the chance for young film-makers to present their work to the general public at film screenings, Roma Independent Film Festival offers a series of special events designed to stimulate enthusiasm and create discussion,” organisers say.

Film-makers are set to compete for a grand prize of EUR 50,000, ensuring the documentaries, shorts and animations on show are of the highest calibre.

Previous winners have included Marko Kostic’s The Paper Prince, The Greatest Silence: Rape In The Congo by Lisa F Jackson and Chi Nasce Tondo by Alessandro Valori.

The 2009 event is set to take place at the Nuovo Cinema Aquila, located in the Pigneto neighbourhood, which is easily accessible to those staying in central Rome hotels.

The festival runs from March 19th - 27th.  [via]

Ashland Independent Film Festival Cuts Its Budget

The Ashland Independent Film Festival, facing tough times, has trimmed its budget by about $60,000. The popular event exhibits some 90 films in early April every year. It’s the first-ever mid-year cut for the 8-year-old festival.

AIFF this year will show only two or three extra-big films it pays to exhibit, instead of five or six. The event program, usually 88 to 92 pages, has been cut to 72.

Macon Film & Video Festival aka MAGA is back

The 4th Macon Film & Video Festival, known as MAGA on the independent film circuit returns February 18 thru 22nd.

MAGA has corralled three heavyweights, respectively, from Georgia sports mythology, Hollywood’s star factory and Macon’s own close-knit theatrical community. The three - former University of Georgia football head coach and athletics director Vince Dooley, veteran actress Karen Black and Macon’s own Carrie Preston - are the festival’s magnetic luminaries.  Read more …
