The 40th Auckland International Film Festival opens on Thursday 10 July with Apron Strings, a fusion of cultures and quintessentially New Zealand. Deliciously concocted, superbly acted and directed by Auckland’s own Sima Urale, Apron Strings is a local delight to savor. The festival runs through July 27

Two new films have been announced today as late confirmations.

The films are Werner Herzog’s latest documentary, Encounters at the End of the World, and another documentary entitled Anvil! The Story of Anvil.

Herzog’s film is said to capture Antarctica’s rarely seen beauty on film and also examine a fascinating society that lives on the frozen continent for the greater part of the year.

Anvil! The Story of Anvil is a rock n roll documentary which has been billed ‘the real life Spinal Tap’. It tells the story of metal band Anvil and is reported to have had audiences standing and cheering cinemas.
