Philadelphia CineFest it is …

Following months of internecine disputes, Philadelphia’s annual spring film festival has a new name - Philadelphia CineFest - and has its opening- and closing-night titles locked in.

Running from Thursday, March 26, through Monday, April 6, the CineFest - headed by former Philadelphia Film Festival artistic director Ray Murray and his crew - will show close to 250 films from 39 countries, host visiting stars and filmmakers, and take over at least four Philadelphia screen venues. Then the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour stops by Rochester Institute of Technology’s Ingle Auditorium, Saturday and Sunday, February 21 and 22, bringing with it more than 10 films having to do with mountains, adventure, or magic helmets in some form. Tentative selections include “The Red Helmet,” where a fearful young boy discovers a magic helmet in the woods that leads him on a crazy adventure; “Silent Snow,” which preaches about the harms of pesticides and pollution carried to the arctic by northbound waves and wind; and “Flying with Eagles,” a film that examines paraglider Louise Crandal’s harrowing goal of gliding over the Russian steppe with an eagle.  Read more …

Maine Sport Outfitters will host the Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 13, in the Strom Auditorium of Camden Hills Regional High School, Route 90. The Banff Mountain Film Festival World Tour is produced by Mountain Culture at The Banff Centre and features award-winning films and audience favorites from approximately 300 films entered in the annual festival in Banff Alberta, Canada.  Read more …

Second Reggae Film Festival Postponed

The second staging of the Reggae Film Festival in Jamaica has been postponed. In an email sent to the media, Barbara Blake Hannah, the film festival director, explained why the decision was made.

“The decision to postpone the second Reggae Film Festival scheduled to have taken place February 23-27, was one of the saddest decisions I have ever had to take. Sad, yes, but inevitable, given that funding had not been sourced to stage the event whose six months of planning was now in the completion stage.”  Read more …

Cleveland International Film Festival Opens With Comedy-drama “Lightbulb”

The comedy-drama “Lightbulb” from director Jeff Balsmeyer and starring Dallas Roberts and Jeremy Renner, opens the 33rd Cleveland International Film Festival on Thursday, March 19, at Tower City Cinemas.

“Lightbulb” follows the misadventures of a small-time inventor and his best friend, and is based on the real-life foibles of screenwriter and producer Mike Cram.

This year’s festival runs through Sunday, March 29, and will feature more than 300 films. Read more …

Berlin International Film Festival Online Press Scandal

A nasty posting by film journalist Wolfgang Hobel of Spiegel Online attacking the Berlinale press office has given the Berlin International Film Festival its first online scandal.

“The hardest, meanest, most unhelpful press department in the world … with maximum unfriendliness and Prussian administrative crabbiness,” Hobel wrote before comparing employees at the press office with the single mother Katie, played by Alexandra Lamy in Francois Ozon’s “Ricky.” Read more …
