Yash Raj Films’ New York has been selected as the opening film at the 33rd Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF), 2009. The festival will be held from 10th to 20th November in Cairo, Egypt.
A month before its opening on November 18, the 32nd Cairo International Film Festival (CIFF), an Egyptian culture ministry event, is already beset by controversy.
Press and film scene activists have launched a campaign to boycott the festival in response to a statement by the culture minister, Farouk Hosni, that journalists would not be allowed in the main hall of the Cairo Opera House for the opening ceremony but would instead watch the proceedings live on screens placed elsewhere.
Neither the programme nor the jury members in this year’s event have yet been announced.
This year the 30th Cairo International Film Festival, scheduled for November 18th to 28th, will take place under the presidency of the actor Dr Ezzat Abou Auf and the honorary President the international super star Omar Sharif. They were appointed by the ministry of culture Farouk Hosny.
