DEATH MARCH OF BATAAN
The forced march, involving 75,000 American and Filipino prisoners of war captured by the Japanese in the Philippines from the Bataan peninsula to prison camps, was characterized by wide-ranging physical abuse and murder, and resulted in very high fatalities inflicted upon the prisoners and civilians along the route by the Japanese soldiers. Beheadings, cut throats and casual shootings were the more common and merciful actions - compared to bayonet stabbings, rapes, disembowelments, numerous rifle butt beatings and a deliberate refusal to allow the prisoners food or water while keeping them continually marching for nearly a week in tropical heat.

SPEED & ANGELS
In 2003, Peyton Wilson entered the world of U.S. Navy fighter pilots. With unprecedented access granted by the Navy, Peyton created the most intimate film ever made on fighter pilots. Epic High Definition aerial footage and stunning cockpit photography provide a dramatic backdrop for the larger story of fighting for your dreams.

MAYDAY: TUGS OF WAR-EUROPE
Deep Sea Rescue Tugs were assigned to save ships that were torpedoed in World War II convoys. Filmmaker Robin D. Williams found the men who were on those rescue tugs and made sure the men had a chance to tell their story. The film takes the audience from the Battle of the Atlantic through the Normandy invasion and D-Day, June 6, 1944. A story that has never been told.

BAGHDAD DIARY
Written and directed by Sandra and Joseph Consentino, “Baghdad Diary” is a cautionary tale of war’s human toll from two unique perspectives. From 2003-2007, Iraqi taxi driver Fadil Kadom’s video diary records his family’s wartime survival. And in nine dangerous trips to Iraq, NBC News cameraman Craig White embedded with the U.S. Army chronicles everything from combat to the disintegration of Iraqi civil society.

A Special screening will be held at 7pm for active or retired service personal, along with FLIFF members only. A BBQ at 6pm will precede the screening.

The 2008 Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival kicks off tonight with the independent film Coyote starring Brian Petersen, Brett Spackman, Carley Adams, Marina Valle, Osvaldo Hernandez, and David C. Thompson. In the film, J. and Steve, best friends forever, stumble into an opportunity when a Mexican pal, recently deported, needs their help to get back across the border. Surprised at how easy it is to fool the Border Patrol agents in Nogales, the guys see it as a chance to corner the market as the ‘Kinder, Gentler People Smugglers,’ while beating the Minutemen at their own game in the process. Soon enough, J. and Steve learn the real danger in crossing boundaries.

The Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival runs through November 11 and brings 27 days of movies, parties, galas, seminars, and stars from all over the world to Fort Lauderdale, Florida .
