FAVORITE DOCUMENTARY FEATURE - PIDGIN: THE VOICE OF HAWAII, directed by Marlene Booth
The 29th annual Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) has unveiled its audience awards winners from this year’s Fall Festival on Oahu.
FAVORITE NARRATIVE FEATURE was a tie between HIFF’s Gala Presentation of PRECIOUS BASED ON THE NOVEL PUSH BY SAPPHIRE and directed by Lee Daniels, and the world premiere of the Made in Hawaii film BARBARIAN PRINCESS, directed by Marc Forby and starring Q’orianka Kilcher.

The 29th annual Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) will present a special SPOTLIGHT ON THE PHILIPPINES sponsored by L&L Hawaiian Barbecue. This new section highlights exceptional Filipino films and shines the spotlight on several talented filmmakers from the Philippines.
This year’s contemporary works are all US Premieres. They range from the comedy BFF: BEST FRIENDS FOREVER, starring Filipina Superstar and Hawaii favorite Sharon Cuneta and the queen of Filipino comedy Ai Ai Delas; to a hilarious story of life and death in GRANDPA IS DEAD, starring Filipina star Manilyn Reynes in person at the theater; to the indie teen romance that has sold out theaters across the Philippines since winning the Audience Award at Cinemalaya 2009 , IF I KNEW WHAT YOU SAID.

Some of the most talented moviemakers began their film careers with a short film and every year, the Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF)will showcase and award undiscovered talent. This year, HIFF features an impressive collection of 77 short films from directors across the globe, containing diverse genres and subject matter and includes a strong showing from talented local filmmakers.
Over 170 films from 36 different countries will be featured at this year’s festival. HIFF’s 2009 program is being held at the Regal Dole Cannery Stadium 18 Theaters from October 15-25.

The Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) will present the world premiere of NINOY AQUINO AND THE RISE OF PEOPLE POWER where media and audience members will have the opportunity to talk with Ken Kashiwahara, the brother-in-law of late Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino. The film is a Halekulani Golden Orchid Award nominee for Best Documentary.
Ken Kashiwahara planned Aquino’s fateful return to the Philippines to confront Ferdinand Marcos and was also at Aquino’s side on the airplane at the moment of his death. Ken will attend the screening on Sunday, October 18th at noon at Regal Dole Cannery Stadium 18 Theaters. He will be available 30 minutes before the screening for interviews and will also take part in a Q & A after the screening. A second screening of the film will be held on Wednesday, October 21st at 4:30pm at Regal Dole Cannery Stadium 18 Theaters.

Cinephiles ready to immerse themselves in Japanese culture have 30 films from Japanese or Japanese Diaspora filmmakers to choose from this year at the 2009 Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF).
The impressive collection of films to be screened at the 11-day festival include the world premiere of SIDEWAYS, the Japanese remake of Alexander Payne’s award-winning film, the North American premiere of SNOW PRINCE from the creative team of DEPARTURES,which won the audience award last year at HIFF and a 2009 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film. Anime is back at HIFF with three premieres – MAI MAI MIRACLE, EVANGELION 2.0, and FIRST SQUAD. The festival is also pleased to present AIR DOLL from director Kore-eda Hirokazu (award winning director of STILL WALKING and NOBODY KNOWS) and starring Korean starlet Bae Doona (THE HOST, LINDA LINDA LINDA, TAKE CARE OF MY CAT).

The 29th Annual Hawaii International Film Festival, the premier international film event in the Pacific, will present and spotlight Hawaii-born actress Maggie Q with its “Maverick Award.” Her newest film, the Chinese epic tale The Warrior and The Wolf , directed by Tian Zhuangzhuang, will close the festival on Saturday, October 24th at 7:00 p.m.

The Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) is teaming up with The Vilcek Foundation to present five films in a program titled “American Immigrant Filmmakers On Profile” (AIFP). The screenings will be held during the Festival from October 15-25 at the Regal Dole Cannery Stadium 18 Theaters.
Three of the AIFP films will highlight the talents of foreign-born directors: BOMBAY SUMMER by Joseph Mathew Varghese, A VILLAGE CALLED VERSAILLES by S. Leo Chiang, and THE PEOPLE I’VE SLEPT WITH by Quentin Lee. The other two films, WHITE ON RICE and PRINCE OF BROADWAY, will showcase the prowess of immigrant actors Hiroshi Watanabe and Karren Karagulian, respectively.

The 29th annual Hawaii International Film Festival announced the Chinese fantasy epic The Warrior And The Wolf as the closing night film. The screening, sponsored by Hawaii National Bank, will be held at the Regal Dole Cannery Stadium 18 Cinemas on Saturday, October 24th at 7:00 p.m.
Adapted from Japanese writer Yasushi Inoue’s novel and directed by Tian Zhuangzhuang, the fantasy film tells the story of an ancient Chinese general and his lover from a cursed clan with mysterious connections with wolves. The film also stars Japanese A-list actor Jo Odagiri and actress Maggie Q.
