RESOLUTION 819 by Giacomo Battiato

[United Nations Resolution 819 guaranteed the safety and protection of the Muslim populations Srebrenica, Bosnia. In July 1985, General Mladic's Bosnian Serb soldiers took the protected area, under the eyes of the completely passive UN troops. Thousands were deported, of which 8000, mostly old people and children, completely disappeared. The International Criminal Tribunal at The Hague sent volunteer French investigator Jacques Calvez to find out what really happened to those people. It is a journey into hell. Jacques faces many kinds of adversity in a country still at war and, alone from the start, is met with hatred and sorrow. He will fight for years to find the mass graves and prove that innocent men were tortured and killed by the criminals lead by Karadzic and Mladic.]

OPIUM WAR by Siddiq Barmak

[In a far mountainous place after Taliban regime in Afghanistan, two American soldiers - one white officer and the other an African-American soldier - are lost after their helicopter had crashed. The soldier waits for a chance to run away from the officer while the wounded officer coerces the soldier with a pistol to carry him around. The two are in discords but they need each other to survive in the hostile land. When they cross the poppy field, the two soothe the pain from the hurt, fatigue and dread from the war by licking the substance of the poppy capsules. They soon notice armored personal carriers (APC) with a white flag in the middle of the poppy field, a symbol of Taliban. With nothing much in their hands, they begin attacking the vehicles. But what they find inside in the APCs is an Afghan family living inside...]

After the first two editions, which were a runaway hit with festival audiences, the International Rome Film Festival returns from October 22nd to 31st, 2008, with a rich offering of films, retrospectives, encounters, exhibitions, and concerts, with major Italian and international stars in attendance.
Underlying the festival in its third year is once more the winning combination of popular appeal and the cultural excellence of the program of quality cinema and an exciting blend of the other arts. It’s a recipe for success guaranteed to draw diehard film aficionados and first-time festival-goers to the same event.
The entire city of Rome serves as a spectacular ‘film set’ backdrop for the festival itself, whose nerve center is once more the Auditorium Parco della Musica – designed by Renzo piano – and the neighboring Cinema Village.
Gian Luigi Rondi is the President of the Fondazione Cinema per Roma and Francesca Via is the General Director. The General Coordinator of the sections making up the Rome Film Festival is Piera Detassis; the artistic directors of the event are Teresa Cavina (Cinema 2008 and Fabbrica dei Progetti | New Cinema Network), Piera Detassis (Anteprima | Première), Gianluca Giannelli (Alice nella città | Alice in the City), Giorgio Gosetti (Cinema 2008 and Mercato Internazionale del Film | The Business Street), Gaia Morrione (Occhio sul Mondo | Focus), and Mario Sesti (L’Altro Cinema | Extra).
The biggest stars of the festival’s third edition are the films themselves. Two world premieres will open and close the event. Kicking off the festival will be a film in competition, L’uomo che ama by Maria Sole Tognazzi, starring Monica Bellucci, Pierfrancesco Favino, Ksenia Rappoport and Piera Degli Esposti.
The closing film will be shown immediately after the awards ceremony: L’ultimo Pulcinella, starring Massimo Ranieri, directed by Maurizio Scaparro and based on his renowned play, itself inspired by an idea of Roberto Rossellini’s. Read more of this article »

The intriguing, extravagant life of the 18th-century Duchess of Devonshire, Princess Lady’s notorious ancestor – brought to the screen by Saul Dibb in The Duchess, starring Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes – and the violence era of rebellion in Germany in the 1970s – in Uli Edel’s The Baader-Meinhof Complex (Der Baader Meinhof Komplex), starring Bruno Ganz and Alexandra Maria Lara: these are just two of the titles to be showcased at the third edition of the Festival Internazionale del Film di Roma, which will run from October 22nd to 31st. Both films will be presented in the “Anteprima” (Première) section as part of the Official Selection.
The films selected for “Cinema 2008” this year take the same wide view: they include the world premiere of 8 (Huit), a film that is also an ambitious project to raise the public’s awareness of the United Nation’s campaign to halve global poverty (and 191 countries have already come on board). The film is divided into eight segments, directed by Jane Campion, Gael García Bernal, Jan Kounen, Mira Nair, Gaspar Noé, Abderrahmane Sissako, Gus Van Sant, e Wim Wenders respectively. Also on the “Cinema 2008” programme, the Franco-Cambodian film The Sea Wall (Un barrage contre le Pacifique), directed by Rithy Panh. Isabelle Huppert stars in this screen adaptation of the novel by Marguerite Duras. Read more of this article »

Al Pacino will be the guest of honour at the third Festival Internazionale del Film di Roma (October 22 – 31, 2008). The American actor is actually coming to Italy to collect the Marc’Aurelio Alla Carriera - Acting Award, being given to the Actors Studio, of which he is one of the presidents. The Acting Award is the annual recognition given by the Festival Internazionale del Film to an international personality, within the section “L’Altro Cinema” (Extra). Sean Connery (2006) and Sofia Loren (2007) received the accolade prior to Al Pacino.
“I am thrilled to represent the Actors Studio at this wonderful Film Festival”, commented Al Pacino. “This is our third year of being honoured by you and we are grateful for the spotlight you have shown The Studio by sharing some of the 60 years of great films that have represented the work that we do”. The actor continued, “Thank you for bestowing your ‘Marc’Aurelio Acting Award’ on me. It is a further indication of the homage to the work of the Actors Studio and I am very honoured to receive it”.
Head of the “L’Altro Cinema” (Extra) section, Mario Sesti, reiterated that “there could not have been a better occasion to crown the extraordinary collaboration between the Rome Festival and the Actors Studio. It has involved a retrospective of almost 30 films, with two extremely popular workshops and numerous encounters with performers such as Jane Fonda, Martin Landau, Ellen Burstyn and others, all a resounding success, and not merely with cinema professionals”.
Following in the footsteps of the other Acting Award recipients Sophia Loren and Sean Connery, this year Al Pacino will also participate in a meeting with the Festival public and accredited journalists as part of the “L’Altro Cinema” (Extra) section. During this encounter he will comment on scenes from films chosen to demonstrate the unmistakable method of identification and subjective research that has been the ever-present hallmark of the Actors Studio style.
In addition, the Festival del Film di Roma, will put on an Al Pacino retrospective. Some films, such as Looking for Richard and the unseen Chinese Coffee and Babylonia (aka Babbleonia), were specified by the American actor himself. While other titles will be chosen by the public at large, via an online survey “Vote for your favourite Al Pacino”.
