MARCHING BAND A documentary film by Claude Miller

The evolution of Indigenous cinema will be celebrated at the 10th Anniversary of the imagineNATIVE Film + Media Arts Festival, which runs in Toronto from today, Wednesday, October 14th until Sunday, October 18th, 2008.
The Festival, which annually spotlights the work of Native filmmakers and media artists from across the Indigenous spectrum, will showcase more than 125 works by Indigenous people at the forefront of innovation in film, video, radio and new media.

CMJ Film Festival will host the genre-bending dark comedy, The Men Who Stare At Goats on Wednesday, October 21 at 7:00pm. George Clooney, Ewan McGregor, Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges all star in this film about a bizarre paranormal military unit in Iraq. Q&A to follow the screening with members from the cast.

- 33rd Cleveland International Film Festival American Independent Audience Award winning film “Prince of Broadway”
The 33rd Cleveland International Film Festival wrapped up Sunday night by posting its best attendance ever: more than 66,500 fans. It beat the record set in 2007 by nearly 14,000.
“Cherry Blossoms-Hanami,” Doris Dorrie’s moving drama about a man’s unlikely trip to Japan, won the 22nd Roxanne T. Mueller Audience Choice Award for Best Film.
The Central and Eastern European Film Competition was won by “The Investigator,” the killer-turned-detective saga from Hungary by director Attila Gigor.
The $5,000 Greg Gund Memorial Standing Up Competition award went to Aron Gaudet for his documentary “The Way We Get By,” about senior troop-greeters in Maine.
“Hungu” took the best animated short award, while “Gilles” won for best live-action short. This year’s winners are eligible for Oscar nominations because the Cleveland festival is an official qualifying event for the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.

The Japan Film Festival-Los Angeles 2009 will be held from Friday, April 10 - Sunday, April 19 in Santa Monica and Downtown Los Angeles and will feature both North American and Los Angeles Premieres. The festival will be showing 22 feature films in total.

San Francisco Independent Film Festival, Feb 5 - 22

The 11th Annual San Francisco Independent Film Festival, Feb 5 - 22, opens on Thursday night with Somers Town by Shane Meadows. The award-winning film was hailed as the best British film of the year and received the top award at the 2008 Edinburgh Film Festival and won the Best Actor award at the Tribeca Film Festival. It follows two teenage boys on little adventures around town and is a story of the social environment in London. It started out as a short film that eventually grew into a full length feature and was shot in just 17 days. [via]

Portland International Film Festival (PIFF) opens on Thursday.

The 32nd Portland International Film Festival (PIFF), will showcase 115 compelling new films from over three-dozen countries, including regional work, to an audience of more than 35,000 over the next two weeks.
The Festival opens Thursday, February 5th at the Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall with the gala premiere of Oregon-based animation studio LAIKA’s new movie Coraline. The festival runs thru February 22.

Kathmandu City, the cosmopolitan heart of the Himalayan region, is hosting the sixth edition of Kathmandu International Mountain Film Festival from December 11-15, 2008. More than 60 films covering a wide array of subjects - including conflict, culture, climbing, wildlife, environment, globalization, gender, and lifestyles - will be screened back-to-back at the Rashtriya Sabha Griha and the Nepal Tourism Board, Pradarshani Marg (Exhibition Road).
Thirty-four films will be screened in the international non-competitive section, 19 in the international competitive category, and 12 films in Nepali Panorama section.

The sixth Asiana International Short Film Festival kicked off this week and will run until next Monday in Gwanghwamun, downtown Seoul. Over 1,700 films from 70 countries are taking part in this year’s festival, with about 50 films competing for the W40 million (US$1=W1,330) grand prize. The festival also selects in-flight movies for Korea’s second flag carrier. Each year the organizing committee chooses around 10 films to be shown during Asiana’s international flights until June the following year. [via]
Out of 1,743 films from 69 countries, 52 films from 30 countries are selected for the Official Selection.
