The 29th annual Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) has unveiled its audience awards winners from this year’s Fall Festival on Oahu.
FAVORITE NARRATIVE FEATURE was a tie between HIFF’s Gala Presentation of PRECIOUS BASED ON THE NOVEL PUSH BY SAPPHIRE and directed by Lee Daniels, and the world premiere of the Made in Hawaii film BARBARIAN PRINCESS, directed by Marc Forby and starring Q’orianka Kilcher.

"The Road" by John Hillcott is this year's centrepiece gala
The 20th Stockholm International Film Festival which runs November 18 - 29 will screen 180 films, from over 50 countries, 109 Nordic premieres, 49 debutant directors, seven world premieres and a world-class selection of established directors. This year’s opening film is “Precious” by Lee Daniels, “The Road” by John Hillcott is this year’s centrepiece gala. The festival closes with the “Up in the Air” by Jason Reitman.
Actress Susan Sarandon will receive this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award and the Stockholm Visionary Award recipient 2009 is director Luc Besson of ”Subway”, ”The Fifth Element” and ”The Big Blue.”

Mississippi Damned
Tina Mabry’s drama Mississippi Damned was awarded the top prize at the Chicago International Film Festival winning the CIFF Gold Plaque for Best Picture, in addition to Best Screenplay for director Tina Mabry and Best Supporting Actress for Jossie Harris. Based on a true story, Mississippi Damned is the brutally honest tale of what happens when a family’s haven is also its prison - a vicious cycle of abuse, addiction, and lies.

Gabourey Sidibe in Precious: Based on the Novel Push by Sapphire
The 13th Annual Hollywood Film Festival and Hollywood Awards, presented by Starz, announced the honorees who will be recognized for their achievements at the festival’s Hollywood Awards Gala Ceremony.
Actress Carey Mulligan will receive the “Hollywood Breakthrough Actress Award,” actor Jeremy Renner will be honored with the “Hollywood Breakthrough Actor Award,” director Lee Daniels will receive the “Hollywood Breakthrough Director Award,” Gabourey Sidibe will receive the “New Hollywood Award,” and screenwriters Scott Neustadter and Michael H. Weber will be recognized with the “Hollywood Breakthrough Screenwriter Award.”
The gala ceremony will take place at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills on October 26, 2009.

The 12th annual Savannah Film Festival, hosted by the Savannah College of Art and Design, will take place from Saturday, October 31-Saturday, November 7.
Films to receive special gala screenings will include Jean-Marc Vallée’s “The Young Victoria”; Oren Moverman’s “The Messenger,” with Moverman and stars Woody Harrelson and Ben Foster in attendance; Grant Heslov’s “The Men Who Stare at Goats”; Pedro Almodovar’s “Broken Embraces”; Lone Sherfig’s “An Education”; the United States premieres of James Ivory’s “The City of Your Final Destination,” with Ivory in attendance, and Nick Moran’s “Telstar,” with Moran and star Con O’Neill in attendance; Jodie Markell’s “The Loss of a Teardrop Diamond” (from a screenplay by Tennessee Williams); Cannes Palme d’Or winner Michael Haneke’s “The White Ribbon”; and Lee Daniels’ “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire,” winner of the Grand-Jury Prize at Sundance and the Audience Award at the Toronto Film Festival. Daniels and star Gabourey Sidibe will be in attendance.

Sony Pictures Classics has acquired North American and Latin American rights for under $3 million to Lone Scherfig’s “An Education” after a heated bidding war. Written by Nick Hornby from a memoir by Lynn Barber, “An Education” stars Sundance “It Girl” Carey Mulligan as a 16-year-old British schoolgirl who falls hard for a charming older man played by Peter Sarsgaard.
