The New Hampshire Film Festival begins today Thursday, Oct. 15 and continues throughout the weekend until Sunday, Oct. 18. The festival features the premiere of 80 films, including a number of feature films, documentaries, animations, as well as more than 50 short films, 20 of which are produced in New Hampshire.

“The Misfortunates,” directed by Felix van Groeningen was the big favorite at the Hamptons International Film Festival taking home 3 awards including the top prize Golden Starfish Award for Best Narrative Feature.
Based on the best-selling semi-autobiographical novel by author Dimitri Verhulst, The Misfortunates depicts the life in a small country town of 13 year old Gunther who lives with his father and uncles in a world of drinking, gambling and a general yobbish lifestyle. Days are filled with gambling, drinking competitions and if lucky, nude bicycle competitions. What starts out as low-brow comedy soon becomes a bittersweet tale about the need to break beyond your upbringing and family environment.
