Waste Land by Lucy Walker

Lucy Walker’s ‘Waste Land’ took the top 2010 IDA Documentary Award, ‘IDA PARE LORENTZ AWARD’ as well as the the IDA Award for Best Documentary Feature. Waste Land follows renowned artist Vik Muniz as he journeys from his home in Brooklyn to his native Brazil and the world’s largest garbage dump, Jardim Gramacho, located on the outskirts of Rio. There, he photographs an eclectic band of catadores–self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with them, as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage, reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives. Waste Land offers stirring evidence of the transformative power of art and the alchemy of the human spirit.

The (International Documentary Association) IDA promotes nonfiction filmmakers, and is dedicated to increasing public awareness for the documentary genre. IDA Documentary Awards is an annual event that recognizes and honors outstanding documentary films and filmmakers.

Documentary producer, director Morgan Spurlock returns as host of the 2010 IDA Documentary Awards. Host of the Awards in 2008, the Academy Award® and Emmy® Award-nominated Spurlock directed Super Size Me (2004), Where in the World Is Osama Bin Laden? (2008), The Simpsons 20th Anniversary Special: In 3-D! On Ice! (2010), Freakonomics (2010) and Comic-Con Episode Four: A Fan’s Hope, set for release in 2011.

The IDA will award its prestigious 2010 Career Achievement Award to legendary documentary filmmaker Barbara Kopple. This award is given to a filmmaker who has made a major impact on the documentary genre through a long and distinguished body of work. Kopple’s 1976 documentary, Harlan County USA, about a coal miners’ strike in Kentucky, earned an Academy Award® as well as a place in the National Film Registry of the Library of Congress. Her 1991 film American Dream also won an Academy Award®, as well as the Jury Prize, the Audience Award and the Filmmaker’s Trophy at the Sundance Film Festival.

The 2010 IDA Pioneer Award honors Alan and Susan Raymond, the filmmakers behind the seminal nonfiction series prototype, An American Family (1973). After An American Family, the Raymonds formed their own company, Video Verite, and produced The Police Tapes (1977), which captures the life and times of a precinct in the South Bronx, and which inspired numerous fiction and nonfiction law enforcement series. The couple received an Oscar® nomination for Doing Time: Life Inside the Big House (1991) and an Oscar® for I Am a Promise: The Children of Stanton Elementary School (1993).

Academy Award® winner and longtime USC film professor Mark Jonathan Harris will be honored with the IDA Preservation and Scholarship Award. Harris received his Oscars® for the documentaries The Redwoods (1968) and Into the Arms of Strangers: Stories of the Kindertransport (2000) and directed the Oscar winning feature documentary, The Long Way Home (1997). Chair of the documentary film program at the University of Southern California School of Cinematic Arts, Harris has taught at USC for over 25 years.

Jeff Malmberg, director of MARWENCOL will receive the 2010 IDA/Jacqueline Donnet Emerging Documentary Filmmaker Award.
