The films have been revealed for this year’s 2016 On Location: MEMPHIS International Film & Music Festival (OL:M) taking place from August 11 to 14, primarily at Midtown’s Malco Studio on the Square.

“We have a great mix of films this year,” said OL:M Executive Director, Angela Green. “We’re going for quality over quantity and you’d be hard-pressed to find more diverse subject matter – and audiences – anywhere in the country.”

Nearly two dozen films from half a dozen countries are slated for screening. Among them is the 25th anniversary celebration of The Five Heartbeats, the story of a Motown-inspired soul group. Both director Robert Townsend and actor Leon will be in attendance.

Also receiving top billing is the regional premiere of Bollywood film Nil Battey Sannata (The New Classmate), which explores a mother-daughter relationship. Other special presentations include documentaries on the Beale Street Flippers entitled The Wizard of Beale Street; Nighthawks on the Blue Highway, which is about legendary blues band The Nighthawks; a middle- and high school-student project called Women of STAX: Soul Sistahs; and various projects devoted to the topics of race and faith.

As always, independent submissions from around the world will make up much of the festival’s programming. This year features, documentary shorts and animated shorts will vie for top category honors. Among the features are Cut to the Chase, starring cult hero Lance Henriksen, and Year by the Sea, directed by Alexander Janko. Janko, best known as an award-winning composer, is making his directorial debut.

The live action shorts category this year is hosted by festival partner, Memphis Film Prize. The short film competition will award $10,000 in cash to the top audience/industry professional choice among 10 short films shot in Shelby County. Memphis Film Prize Weekend will occur conjunction with the On Location: MEMPHIS festival.

The 17th Annual On Location: MEMPHIS International Film & Music Festival kicks off with a Mix & Mingle Preview Party at the Hard Rock Cafe on Thursday, August 11, followed by two days of film screenings and industry discussions on August 12 and 13. The event wraps up on Sunday, August 14, with an awards brunch at The Atrium in Midtown. Special panels, musical guests and other events will also be part of the weekend’s festivities.

A complete list of films is available on the On Location: MEMPHIS website.
