Filmfest Hamburg will open with Ewan McGregor’s directorial debut American Pastoral, which is adapted from a novel of the same name by Pulitzer Prize winning author Philip Roth.
McGregor also stars in the film, along with Jennifer Connelly and Dakota Fanning. Ewan McGregor and his leading actress Jennifer Connelly will be present at the opening ceremony of the festival on September 29, 2016.
Since his 1998 breakthrough role in Danny Boyle’s Trainspotting, Ewan McGregor (now aged 45) has become an established name in Hollywood. He has continued to enthrall viewers with his performances, whether in Tim Burton’s Big Fish, Baz Luhrmann’s Moulin Rouge or the blockbuster hits Star Wars Episodes 1-3; in the latter, he embodied Obi-Wan Kenobi. American Pastoral is the first film that McGregor has directed.
Plot: America during the post-war boom: Seymour Levov, (Ewan McGregor), known as “Swede”, is an average Joe with an average life. A onetime star athlete at his high school in Newark, he’s now become a successful business owner, the husband of former Miss New Jersey, Dawn (Jennifer Connelly) and the father of an enchanting daughter, Merry (Dakota Fanning). The family lives in a farmhouse in the country – a perfect idyll. But not even a picture-perfect family can escape the wave of student riots, racial unrest and protests against the Vietnam War. Sucked into the undertow of the events, Merry joins a militant group and is accused of a terrorist attack. She vanishes without a trace. The ensuing nightmare for Swede and his wife mirrors the tragedy of an entire nation.
American Pastoral is a production of Lakeshore Entertainment and will celebrate its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival. It opens in U.S. theatres on October 21, 2016.
In Germany, the film – which is distributed by Splendid Film (and Tobis Film) – will open in theatres on November 17, 2016.
The 24th FILMFEST HAMBURG will take place from September 29 to October 8, 2016.
