The European premiere of The Weinstein Company’s LION, directed by Garth Davis, will open the 12th edition the Zurich Film Festival (ZFF) on Thursday, September 22nd.
The film stars Dev Patel (SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE), Academy Award® nominee Rooney Mara (THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO) and Academy Award® winner Nicole Kidman (SECRET IN THEIR EYES).
A Weinstein Company release, LION tells the true story of how five year old Saroo gets lost on a train which takes him thousands of Kilometers across India, away from home and family. Saroo must learn to survive alone in Kolkata, before ultimately being adopted by an Australian couple. Twenty five years later, armed with only a handful of memories, his unwavering determination, and a revolutionary technology known as Google Earth, he sets out to find his lost family and finally return to his first home.
LION is Garth Davis’ feature directorial debut, having previously co-directed the mini-series TOP OF THE LAKE with Jane Campion. Luke Davies adapted the screenplay from Saroo Brierly’s touching memoir A Long Way Home.
Said ZFF Co-Directors Spoerri and Schildknecht, “The buzz around LION is amazing – which is just what you would expect from a Weinstein Company film expected to play strong through the awards season. The masterful storytelling exhibited in this film is a great tone setter for the festival and we’re excited to be hosting the European Premiere.”
Harvey Weinstein and the filmmakers will be in attendance to present the film at ZFF.
