JEAN OF THE JONESES
JEAN OF THE JONESES

A total of 172 productions from 36 countries, including 43 debut works and not less than 17 world premieres and a record number of Swiss films, will screen over the 11 days of this years Zurich Film Festival.

Festival directors Nadja Schildknecht and Karl Spoerri revealed the organizational structure and program of the 12th Zurich Film Festival on Thursday. They were delighted that all signals still point towards healthy annual growth. Zurich’s Mayor Corine Mauch said in her preliminary statement in this year’s catalogue that the ZFF is a “fixed star in Zurich’s cultural cosmos”.

Said Co-Director Nadja Schildknecht: “As each year passes, it becomes increasingly clear that the ZFF is an indispensible meeting place for the national and international film industry. For viewers, in turn, this changes a standard visit to the cinema into a cinema experience for all.”

With a total of 172 films (previous year: 161), including 43 debut works (previous year: 36) and 17 world premieres (previous year: 14), the ZFF has long been established as a large-scale event. Said Schildknecht: “We will now present films on 12 screens (previous year: 10) and expect to welcome 500 guests from around the globe. The budget has also increased accordingly, from 7.1 M last year to 7.2 M this year.”

Said Co-Director Karl Spoerri: “The common theme uniting the films in our international competition is family. Filmmakers use familial tales as a basis to playfully interweave complex topics like globalisation, religion, flight, identity and love, and captivate with unique and compelling works. This year sees a particularly large number of strong women both in front of and behind the camera.”

He continued: “The numerous world premieres in almost all sections of the competition this year demonstrates once again that the ZFF is becoming increasingly important as the premiere location for Swiss film.”
