Tamil film director Vetrimaran’s police brutality film Visaranai has been selected by a Film Federation of India’s jury, headed by filmmaker Ketan Mehta, as India’s official entry in the Foreign Language Film category at the 2017 Oscars.
Visaranai, based on M. Chandrakumar’s novel Lock Up, was chosen out of 29 contenders.
The film starring Dinesh Ravi, Anandhi and Aadukalam Murugadoss, won the 2015 Venice International Film Festival Amnesty International Italia Award, and three awards at the 63rd National Film Awards, Best Feature Film In Tamil, Best Supporting Actor – Samuthirakani and Best Editing – Kishore Te.
Pandi (Ravi), Murugan (Murugadoss), Afzal (Rathnasamy), Kumar (Pradheesh Raj) are homeless Tamil labourers who are working in Andhra Pradesh. Their life takes a turn for worse when they are caught, beaten and tortured brutally in police lock-up for a theft they did not commit, due to police’s need to close a robbery case they are dealing with.
