Attila Till’s Kills On Wheels, a film about a wheelchair-bound assassin gang, has been selected as Hungary’s Best Foreign Language Film submission for the 89th Academy Awards.

Kills on Wheels starring Szabolcs Thuroczy, Zoltan Fenyvesi, Adam Fekete, Dr Dusan Vitanovics, Lidia Danis and Monika Balsai, made its international premiere was at the 2016 Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Twenty-year-old wheelchair user Zoli, his physically disabled friend, and an ex-fireman, who is also confined to a wheelchair, decide to offer their services to the mafia as a gang of hired assassins. But, as is the way with life, the reality is a little more prosaic… In his highly original, action-packed comedy, Hungarian director Attila Till skilfully blends reality with fantasy as he offers a gentle probe into the lives of protagonists living on the edge of society and desirous of things which able-bodied people take for granted. With its in-your-face black humour, the film is a competent match for the 2006 audience smash The Art of Negative Thinking and is set to be a sure-fire hit with viewers as well. The director was inspired to make his film from his own experiences as a volunteer for the disabled. He explains his motivation: “It was crucial to me to make a movie about disabled people where they finally aren’t played by actors but get the opportunity to act themselves and be the real heroes.” [ KVIFF]
