Now its ninth year, the 2016 Charleston International Film Festival (Charleston IFF), will take place November 2 through November 6 at Charleston Music Hall in historic downtown Charleston.
In addition to nightly after parties with live music, live Q&A sessions with industry experts, free educational workshops, and an Awards Gala, the Festival will showcase 63 films from the United States and around the world, including Australia, Poland, Switzerland, Germany, Canada, Spain, United Kingdom, Iran, South Korea, Italy, Greece, Scotland, Russian Federation, Pakistan, Austria, and Argentina.
Warrior Road, a feature independent film shot and crewed in Charleston in partnership with Charliewood Pictures, will kick off the 2016 Festival as the Red Carpet Special Screening on opening night at Charleston Music Hall. Written and directed by independent filmmaker and Charlestonian Brad Jayne, the story follows three teenage boys who rob a South Carolina juke joint before fleeing up the coast to Myrtle Beach.
Three young men in the waterlands of South Carolina rob a backwoods juke joint and flee up the coast to Myrtle Beach, armed with a souped-up Cutlass and a thirst for adventure. But for one of the three, Joseph, the journey becomes a quest for strength and courage in the face of a painful past.’
A throwback to films of the 70′s and 80′s. Easy Rider meets The Outsiders meets Stand By Me, with its own unconventional structure, style, and pace, and a surprisingly spiritual theme. A fundamental quest story told within 24-hours in this rich geography of overgrown maritime forests, tidal creeks and rivers, and fossilized ruins and culture. With an exciting, original style — a visual sub-consciousness — to convey Joseph’s search for contentment and courage with complete emotional authenticity. Taking audiences on this ride with him in the same way a more conventional adventure would. In this case, an adventure of the soul.
“We are thrilled to be able to have the Charleston premiere of our film Warrior Road as part of the Charleston International Film Festival,” stated Denis Gallagher, Founder and Chairman of Charliewood Pictures and Executive Producer of the film. “We are excited to screen our film locally and showcase the amazing filmmaking talent here in Charleston and South Carolina as well as the incredible locations where we filmed.”
Summer Peacher, Charleston IFF Co-Founder and President said, “Even as the challenge of making film selections intensifies each year, we work hard to choose the most striking, unique, and thought-provoking films to share during our Festival. We hope our attendees are as impressed with this year’s selections as we are.”
