The Hawaii International Film Festival (HIFF) celebrates its 36th Anniversary, and runs from November 3 to 13 on O‘ahu. The festival will feature 117 films which includes 19 U.S., 22 international and 19 world premieres from 41 countries. The festival travels to the Big Island and Kaua‘i from November 17 to 20.
“As a vanguard forum of international cinematic achievement in the Asia-Pacific region, HIFF endeavors to recognize new and emerging talent, promote career development and original collaborations through innovative education programs and facilitate dynamic cultural exchange through the cinema arts,” says Robert Lambeth, HIFF’s executive director.
The opening night film, on November 3rd, is THE LAST PRINCESS, the true story of Princess Deokhye the last princess of Korea from Hur Jin-ho, the director of Korean modern classics CHRISTMAS IN AUGUST and ONE FINE SPRING DAY.
The Festival’s centerpiece film, on November 9th is another true story entitled LION starring SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE’s Dev Patel as a young man in search of his lost family in India by Australian filmmaker Garth Davis.
The year’s closing night film is YOUR NAME, an animated film by Makoto Shinkai, about a mysterious connection between a country girl and a Tokyo boy who have never met in person, is making box office history in Japan and already considered an animated masterpiece.
Also being honored this year at HIFF 36 Awards Gala are famed Hong Kong actor Simon Yim, Oscar winning producer of SPOTLIGHT, Nicole Rocklin and the legendary actress and martial arts star, Cheng Pei Pei.
