Your Name has sent shock waves through all corners of the cinematic universe. Since its celebrated release earlier this fall, the film has become a smash hit among critics and audiences alike. Two months after its release, Your Name remains number one at the box office and is already among the top ten highest grossing films in Japan ever. The promising director Makoto Shinkai has now delivered a master piece worthy his reputation as Miyazaki’s heir. Needless to say, Shinkai has his own hyper realistic animation style inspired by real life locations and video games.
The highly original Your Name balances elements of drama and sci-fi in a superb way as it intertwines the destinies of two teenagers. The Tokyo kid Taki starts experiencing lucid dreams and suddenly finds himself in a strange place and a new body – that of the girl Mitsuha – and in turn she finds herself as Taki. Through their dreams Taki and Mitsuha begin to fall in love until they realize that what they are experiencing is triggered by an upcoming apocalyptic event.
