O.J.: Made in America took home the most awards at the inaugural Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards with wins for Best Documentary (Theatrical Feature), Best Director (Theatrical Feature) for Ezra Edelman, Best Limited Documentary Series and Best Sports Documentary.

13th won three awards for Best Documentary (TV/Streaming), Best Political Documentary and Best Director (TV/Streaming) for Ava DuVernay.

The Best First Documentary (TV/Streaming) was a tie, with awards going to both Jacob Bernstein and Nick Hooker for Everything Is Copy – Nora Ephron: Scripted and Unscripted. and Deborah Esquenazi for Southwest of Salem: The Story of the San Antonio Four. Jack Kriegman and Elyse Steinberg won Best First Documentary (Theatrical Feature) for Weiner.

The Beatles: Eight Days a Week – The Touring Years took home Best Music Documentary and I’m Still Here from Miss Sharon Jones – Written by Sharon Jones – Performed by Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings took home the award for Best Song in a Documentary.

ESPN’s 30 for 30 won Best Ongoing Documentary Series and Keith Maitland’s Tower took home the award for Most Innovative Documentary.

Host Penn Jillette lead the celebrations for this year’s Most Compelling Living Subject of a Documentary honorees Danny Fields (Danny Says), Iggy Pop (Gimme Danger), Kirsten Johnson (Cameraperson), Owen Suskind (Life, Animated), Sharon Jones (Miss Sharon Jones!), Steve Gleason (Gleason) and Theo Padnos (Theo Who Lived).

The inaugural Critics’ Choice Documentary Awards honor the finest achievement in documentary features and non-fiction television. The awards were determined by BFCA and BTJA members with expertise in the documentary field.
