Mavis! Documentary

The feature documentary, MAVIS!, a film festival favorite, which premiered on HBO in February, 2016, will be released on DVD, iTunes and Amazon on December 2nd, 2016.

MAVIS! is the first documentary on gospel/soul music legend and civil rights icon Mavis Staples and The Staple Singers. Singing freedom songs in the ’60s and topping charts with hits like “I’ll Take You There” in the ’70s as part of her family group. Mavis served as muse to both Bob Dylan and Prince at the peak of their careers and she is still breaking new ground with her recent albums produced by Wilco’s Jeff Tweedy and M. Ward. Mavis has always stayed true to her roots, kept her family close, and inspired millions along the way.

Directed by Jessica Edwards, the documentary features powerful live performances, rare archival footage, and conversations with friends and contemporaries including Bob Dylan, Prince, Bonnie Raitt, Levon Helm, Jeff Tweedy, Chuck D, and more. MAVIS! reveals the struggles, successes, and intimate stories of her journey. At 77, she’s making the most vital music of her career, winning awards, and reaching a new generation of fans. Her message of love and equality is needed now more than ever.

Mavis Staples will receive a Kennedy Center Honor on December 4th, 2016.
