Bleecker Street released the trailer for Together Together, a smart, funny and endearing film about contemporary connections and the particulars of love, directed by Nikole Beckwith.

The comedy, drama film starring Ed Helms, Patti Harrison, Tig Notaro, Julio Torres, Anna Konkle, Timm Sharp, Evan Jonigkeit, Rosalind Chao, Sufe Bradshaw, Greta Titelman, Nora Dunn, along with Fred Melamed, opens in theaters on April 23, 2021 and on digital May 11, 2021.

When Matt (Ed Helms), a single 45-year-old app developer living in San Francisco, decides he wants a child of his own, he hires 26-year-old barista Anna (Patti Harrison) to be his gestational surrogate. A loner by nature, Anna respects Matt’s unconventional parenting choice and finds his sweet-natured excitement at the prospect of fatherhood endearing, if a little over the top at times. Whether he’s surprising her at work with a thermos of pregnancy tea and a pair of arch-supporting clogs, or turning up at her apartment at inopportune moments, Matt clearly needs some work on boundaries. But while Anna is keenly aware that surrogates and parents agree to maintain distance for a reason, she nonetheless finds herself becoming emotionally invested in their budding friendship

As the pregnancy develops, Anna begins spending platonic nights at Matt’s house binge-watching old sitcoms and sharing her dream of going back to college with the surrogacy money she’s earned. Matt, too, opens his heart to Anna, revealing that he’s felt stuck in an endless loop for years, unable to move forward in his life — until now. Despite the unlikely and at times awkward circumstances, they are each happy to have found someone who understands and appreciates them.

But when Matt throws a baby shower for himself with Anna’s help, she suddenly feels a mix of emotions. Although she always knew she would one day have to give up the baby, the thought of losing the intimate bond she and Matt share is something neither one of them had planned for. Realizing they’ve become too close, Anna insists they establish stricter boundaries before the baby is born. With the due date fast approaching, they are faced with a difficult decision: go through with the birth as emotionally detached acquaintances, or acknowledge their unexpected friendship and rethink their ideas of what it means to love someone, even at the risk of potential heartbreak.
