A MOST VIOLENT YEAR
The National Board of Review has named A MOST VIOLENT YEAR the 2014 Best Film of the Year. “A Most Violent Year is an exhilarating crime drama with a compelling story, outstanding performances, and an elegant cinematic style,” said Annie Schulhof, NBR President. “J.C. Chandor has given us a new and provocative perspective on the American Dream.” The National Board of Review honors diverse members of the film community at their annual Awards Gala, which also acts as a fundraiser for student grant philanthropy. Hosted by Lara Spencer, this year’s gala will take place on January 6, 2015 at Cipriani 42nd Street in New York City.

The 26th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival (PSIFF), scheduled January 2-12, 2015, announced the films selected to compete for the FIPRESCI Award in the Awards Buzz section. The Festival will screen 50 of the 83 official submissions to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for Best Foreign Language Film.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences today announced that 15 films in the Documentary Feature category will advance in the voting process for the 87th Oscars®. One hundred thirty-four films were originally submitted in the category.

The New York Film Critics Circle announced their 2014 award winners earlier today and BOYHOOD snagged the top awards including Best Picture, Best Director for Richard Linklater and Best Supporting Actress for Patricia Arquette. CITIZENFOUR, the Edward Snowden documentary, won the award for Best Non-Fiction Film (Documentary) and Best Foreign Film went to the black and white gem IDA. Best First Film award went to Jennifer Kent for THE BABADOOK.

The International Animated Film Society, ASIFA-Hollywood, announced nominations for its 42nd Annual Annie Awards recognizing the year’s best in the field of animation. The nominees for the top award, Best Animated Feature, include: Big Hero 6 (Walt Disney Animation Studios), Cheatin’ (Plymptoons Studio), How to Train Your Dragon 2 (DreamWorks Animation SKG), Song of the Sea (Cartoon Saloon/GKIDS), The Book of Life (Reel FX), The Boxtrolls (Laika/Focus Features), The LEGO Movie (Warner Bros. Pictures), and The Tale of The Princess Kaguya (Studio Ghibli/GKIDS). The winners will be announced on Saturday, January 31st, 2015.

Narrative and Documentary Competition Lineup Revealed for 2015 Slamdance Film Festival

The Slamdance Film Festival earlier today unveiled its narrative and documentary competition lineups for the upcoming festival taking place January 23 to 29, 2015. The Slamdance feature competition is limited to films made with budgets under $1 million and made by first-time directors. Films include Dennis Rodman’s Big Bang in Pyongyang, directed by Colin Offland, described as “an intimate behind the scenes look at Dennis Rodman’s unlikely friendship with North Korean dictator Kim Jong-un and the staging of the most controversial game of basketball the world has never seen.”

BIRDMAN dominated the list with 10 nominations including Best Film and Best Director for Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu.
