Thomas Vinterberg drama ‘Another Round’, starring Mads Mikkelsen, Thomas Bo Larsen, Magnus Millang, Lars Ranthe, about four weary high school teachers experimenting with the liberating effects of alcohol, has been selected as Denmark’s submission in the International Feature Film category for the 2021 Academy Awards.

‘Another Round’ was selected from a shortlist of three films. The two additional titles on the list were ‘A Perfectly Normal Family’ by Malou Reymann and ‘Shorta’ by the directing duo Anders Ølholm and Frederik Louis Hviid.

Thomas Vinterberg’s drama about four weary high school teachers testing a theory that a constant level of modest inebriation opens our minds to the world has fared well on the festival circuit.

Awards include the French Art House Cinema Prize (Prix des Cinémas Art et Essai), handed out in collaboration with the Cannes Festival, the Silver Shell for Best Actor to Mikkelsen and co-players Thomas Bo Larsen, Magnus Millang and Lars Ranthe, and finally the main prize at the London Film Festival. ‘Another Round’ also screened at Rome Film Festival and recently gained four top nominations at the European Film Awards, to be presented in December.

‘Another Round’ was warmly received in Denmark as it premiered in September, and with admissions now reaching 753,000, the film ranks as the film by Vinterberg selling most tickets at the domestic box office.

Three Danish films have won an Oscar in the international feature film category: Susanne Bier’s ‘In a Better World’ in 2011, Bille August’s ‘Pelle the Conqueror’ in 1989 and Gabriel Axel’s ‘Babette’s Feast’ in 1988.

All Oscar nominations will be announced on March 15, 2021. The 93rd Oscars take place at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on April 25, 2021.
