ARRAY Releasing, the distribution arm of Ava DuVernay’s Peabody Award-winning narrative change collective, will release What We Leave Behind, the SXSW Film Festival award-winning documentary in select US AMC theaters on September 23, 2022, followed by Netflix (United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Australia and New Zealand) on September 30, 2022, coinciding with Hispanic Heritage Month in the US.

Directed by Ilana Sosa, the emotional documentary made its World Premiere at this year’s SXSW Film Festival, where it won two jury awards: the Louis Black Lone Star Award and the Fandor New Voices Award. The film also screened at Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, the Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival, Guanajuato International Film Festival, and the Museum of the Moving Image.

What We Leave Behind follows Julián Moreno, who, after a lifetime of bus rides to the United States to visit his children, quietly begins building a house in his rural Mexico at the age of 89. In filming his work and final days, his granddaughter, Iliana Sosa, crafts a piercingly personal and poetic love letter to her elder and his homeland.
