Rialto Pictures unveiled the official trailer for Cat Person, the genre-bending thriller starring Emilia Jones (CODA) as a 20-year-old sophomore college student who has a brief relationship with an older man who frequently visits the movie theater where she works.

Also starring in the film are Nicholas Braun (Succession) as the older man, Geraldine Viswanathan (Drive-Away Dolls), Isabella Rossellini (Blue Velvet), Fred Melamed (A Serious Man), Liza Koshy (Transformers: Rise of the Beasts) and Michael Gandolfini (The Many Saints of Newark).

Written by Michelle Ashford (Masters of Sex), the story expands upon Kristen Roupenians’ 2017 short story of the same name published in The New Yorker.

Release Date

Directed by DGA Award-winner Susanna Fogel (A Small Light, The Flight Attendant, writer Booksmart), Cat Person world premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival, and opens in theaters in the U.S. beginning October 6th, 2023.

Synopsis

When Margot, a college sophomore (Emilia Jones) goes on a date with the older Robert (Nicholas Braun), she finds that IRL Robert doesn’t live up to the Robert she has been flirting with over texts. Cat Person is a razor-sharp exploration of the gender divide, the quagmire of navigating modern dating and the dangerous projections we make in our minds about the person at the other end of our phones.

Director Susanna Fogel stated “Like the short story that stirred so much controversy, Cat Person will call upon you to reflect on romantic encounters you’ve had in the past, and to question the role (or multiple roles) you may have played. We’ve all been the victim in some narratives and the villain in others, and I hope you’ll walk out of this film with a strong opinion, ready to debate.”
