Greenwich Entertainment will release the documentary film Subject, a provocative exploration of the often murky ethical dilemmas and complex relationships that can exist between documentary filmmakers and their real-life participants.

Directed and produced by Jennifer Tiexiera and Camilla Hall, the film premiered at the Tribeca Festival and will open in theaters on Friday, November 3 in New York (IFC Center) and Los Angeles (Laemmle Glendale) ), with other cities to follow.

Subject explores the life-altering experience of sharing one’s life on screen through key participants of acclaimed documentaries The Staircase, Hoop Dreams, Capturing the Friedmans, The Wolfpack, and The Square. These erstwhile documentary “stars” reveal the highs and lows of their experiences as well as the everyday realities of having their lives put under a microscope. Also featuring commentary from influential figures in the doc world who speak to the fine line between documentation and exploitation, the film unpacks vital issues around the ethics and responsibility inherent in nonfiction filmmaking. As tens of millions of people consume documentaries in an unprecedented “golden era,” Subject urges audiences to consider the often profound impact on their participants.

Featured in the documentary are Arthur Agee, Margie Ratliff, Michael Peterson, Mukunda Angulo, Ahmed Hassan, Jesse Friedman, Elaine Friedman, Lisa Walsh, and Susanne Reisenbichler. Also featuring: Kirsten Johnson, Sam Pollard, Bing Liu, Thom Powers, Sonya Childress, Assia Boundaoui, and more.
