The directors of Honey Boy and American Factory won awards at the 72nd Annual DGA Awards on Saturday, January 25, 2020 at the Ritz-Carlton Hotel in Downtown Los Angeles.
The winner of the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement of a First-Time Feature Film Director for 2019 is Alma Har’el for Honey Boy. This was Ms. Har’el’s second DGA Award nomination. She was previously nominated in the Commercials category in 2017 for Love Without Bias (P&G).
The winner of the Directors Guild of America Award for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in Documentary for 2019 went to Steven Bognar and Julia Reichert for American Factory. This was Mr. Bognar’s and Ms. Reichert’s first DGA Award nomination and win.
The DGA prize is considered a bellwether for the Best Director Oscar with the last six DGA winners all going on to win at the Academy Awards: Alfonso Cuarón for “Roma,” Guillermo del Toro for “The Shape of Water,” Damien Chazelle for “La La Land,” and Alejandro G. Iñárritu for both “The Revenant” and “Birdman or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance).”
