Searchlight Pictures dropped the official trailer for Next Goal Wins, the sports comedy drama film based on the 2014 documentary of the same name by Mike Brett and Steve Jamison, starring Michael Fassbender as coach Thomas Rongen as he tries to lead the American Samoa national football team, considered the weakest football team in the world, to qualification for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Also starring in the film are Elisabeth Moss, Oscar Kightley, Uli Latukefu, Rachel House, Kaimana, David Fane, Beulah Koale, Chris Alosio, Taika Waititi, Will Arnett,and Rhys Darby
Directed by Academy Award Winner Taika Waititi (Jojo Rabbit, Thor: Ragnarok), Next Goal Wins will be released in theaters on November 17th, 2023.
The film follows the American Samoa soccer team, infamous for their brutal 31-0 FIFA loss in 2001. With the World Cup Qualifiers approaching, the team hires down-on-his-luck, maverick coach Thomas Rongen (Michael Fassbender) hoping he will turn the world’s worst soccer team around in this heartfelt underdog comedy.
