Neon revealed the official trailer for Perfect Days, Wim Wenders latest drama film combining four short stories, starring Kōji Yakusho as a toilet cleaner. It was selected as the Japanese entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 96th Academy Awards.
Also starring in the film are Tokio Emoto, Arisa Nakano, Aoi Yamada, Yumi Aso, Sayuri Ishikawa, Tomokazu Miura, and Min Tanaka.
Release Date
Directed by by Wim Wenders, Perfect Days world premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Prize of the Ecumenical Jury and the Best Actor Award for Kōji Yakusho; and opens in theaters with a release date of November 10th for a one week run before it arrives for general public in 2024.
Synopsis
Hirayama is content with his simple life cleaning toilets in Tokyo. Outside of his structured routine he cherishes music on cassette tapes, books, and taking photos of trees. Unexpected encounters reveal more of his story in a deeply moving and poetic reflection on finding beauty in the world around us.

Guardian review gave the film 3 of stars, writing “Perfect Days has a kind of ambient urban charm and Yakusho anchors the film with his understated wisdom and presence: rightly, Wenders doesn’t reveal too much too early about his hero and doesn’t try to tie everything up too neatly. But I found something a little too subdued in this film, though the evocation of Tokyo itself is very uncliched, despite the emphasis on something that is the subject of so many touristy jokes: the loos. Not perfect, but engaging enough.”
Describing the film as an ‘eloquent and emotionally rich Japanese drama’ The Hollywood Reporter review said, “The real reward of Perfect Days, however, is the accumulation of tiny details, tenderly observed fragments of a life that on their own seem inconsequential. When pieced together, they create a poetic, deeply moving account of the unexpected peace, harmony and contentment that one man has worked hard and made difficult decisions to attain.”
