Well Go USA debuted the official trailer for Monolith, the sci-fi/thriller film starring Lily Sullivan – the only on-screen actor in the film, as a journalist uncovering a mystery.

Recently disgraced and desperate for a story, The Interviewer holes herself up in her parents’ luxurious home and gets to work on the only job she can get – hosting a clickbait investigative podcast. When she receives an anonymous email leading her to a retired housekeeper who claims her life has been destroyed by a strange black brick, The Interviewer embarks on a mystery that leads her down a rabbit hole of truth and lies at the heart of her own story. While trying to salvage her career, a disgraced journalist begins investigating a strange conspiracy theory. But as the trail leads uncomfortably close to home, she is left to grapple with the lies at the heart of her own story.

Reiews

Calling the film a ‘gloomy … thriller’ in their review, Variety wrote, “There’s a good movie to be made about podcasts that traffic in unsolved mysteries where hosts rank cliffhangers and that hiccuping dramatic cadence over journalism. For half of its running time, the Australian thriller “Monolith” seems like it might be that movie. But the film, a debut feature from director Matt Vesely and screenwriter Lucy Campbell, falls sway to the clickbait tropes it intends to send up: red herrings, a tone of suffocating gloom and a desperation to keep the audience on the hook.”

ScreenAnarchy review hailed the film as ‘best of this year’s SXSW’, writing “Credit is definitely due to Lucy Campbell’s intricately layered and carefully constructed script. With little more than a single on-screen lead and about a dozen voices over the phone, she’s able to create a full and compelling world. The Interviewer’s arc through Monolith is dramatic, for sure, but Campbell’s careful escalation of the story allows us to stay with her even when things get really crazy. Vesely’s direction as well Michael Tessari, precisely articulated cinematography and Benjamin Speed’s pitch perfect score all support Campbell’s writing in a way that is absolutely necessary for a film like this.”
