Breaking Bread, Beth Elise Hawk’s award-winning documentary about Jews and Arabs cooking together, opens in theaters on February 4, 2022.

The documentary featuring Dr. Nof Atamna-Ismaeel, Shlomi Meir, Ali Khattib, Osama Dalal, Ilan Ferron, Tomer Abergel, Salah Cordi, Shoshi and Fadi Karaman follows Arab and Jewish chefs at Israel’s A-Sham Food Festival as they collaborate on delectable dishes, transform traditional recipes and transcend cultural, religious and political differences.

Breaking Bread will open Friday, February 4 in New York and Los Angeles, expanding to additional cities in the following weeks. New cities and dates have been added below.

Breaking Bread is a documentary set around the first food festival in which innovative Arab and Jewish chefs work in tandem to create mouth-watering dishes in order to foster social change. The action centers on the city of Haifa, a model of multicultural coexistence, and the annual A-Sham Arabic Food Festival, founded by microbiologist Dr. Nof Atamna-Ismaeel, the first Israeli-Arab to win Israel’s reality show MasterChef. Each chef puts a personal spin on traditional recipes handed down over generations – including kishek (Syrian yogurt soup) and qatayef (dessert served during Ramadan) – transforming flavors while political and religious differences are set aside. A treat for the senses, this delectable showcase of culinary heritage gives hope to the idea that collaboration in the kitchen could be a bridge to mutual understanding and lasting peace.
