Thomasin McKenzie, Zoë Kravitz to star in Self-Portrait

Thomasin McKenzie and Zoë Kravitz will star in the psychological horror film Self-Portrait which Mona Fastvold will direct from a script she co-wrote with Brady Corbet (VOX LUX). The film is based on Rachel Lyon’s acclaimed debut novel Self-Portrait with Boy (Scribner).

In Self-Portrait, a grieving photographer Lu Rile (Thomasin McKenzie) moves to a run-down artists’ warehouse in 1990s Brooklyn where she befriends Katherine (Zoë Kravitz), an accomplished painter who lives downstairs. When Katherine suffers her own tragic loss, Lu unknowingly captures the incident in one of her self-portraits, generating a sublime but horrifying image. Consumed with by mutual grief and an intensifying relationship, the women find themselves haunted by a demonic force hellbent on shaking their realities.

Fastvold’s directorial feature debut The Sleepwalker, co-written with and starring Corbet, premiered at Sundance in US Dramatic Competition . Her second feature, The World To Come, premiered in Venice, where it won the Queer Lion. Fastvold and Corbet also co-wrote Corbet’s three directorial features: The Childhood Of A Leader, which won Best Director and Best First Feature at Venice and was nominated for Best First Feature Independent Spirit; VOX LUX; and the upcoming The Brutalist. Fastvold also co-wrote The Mustang with Laure de Clermont-Tonnerre, who directed.

Thomasin McKenzie stars in William Oldroyd’s Eileen opposite Anne Hathaway, which premiered at Sundance to rave reviews. She previously starred in Edgar Wright’s Last Night In Soho, opposite Anya Taylor-Joy and Matt Smith; Jane Campion’s The Power Of The Dog, opposite Benedict Cumberbatch and Kirsten Dunst; M Night Shyamalan’s OLD; Taika Waititi’s JOJO RABBIT, opposite Scarlett Johansson and Sam Rockwell; Justin Kurzel’s The True History Of The Kelly Gang, opposite George Mackay; Liz Garbus’ Netflix film, Lost Girls, opposite Amy Ryan; and David Michod’s The King.

Zoë Kravitz recently wrapped her directorial debut with the original motion picture film, “Pussy Island” written by Kravitz and E.T. Feigenbaum, starring Naomi Ackie and Channing Tatum. Zoë Kravitz most recently starred as Selina Kyle in Matt Reeves and Warner Bros.’ acclaimed blockbuster film “The Batman,” the critically acclaimed feature “Kimi” (Steven Soderbergh’s unnerving surveillance thriller). In 2022, Zoë Kravitz was named one of “The 100 Most Influential People” by TIME Magazine.

Producers are John Lyons, with whom Topic developed the project, and Picture Films’ Margot Hand who recently collaborated with Topic on Randall Park’s acclaimed Sundance debut SHORTCOMINGS. Executive Producers are Ryan Heller, Jennifer Westin and Michael Bloom for Topic Studios, alongside Corbet and Fastvold and Brian Young. Hayley Theisen serves as co-producer.
