Today’s press conference saw the unveiling of the official program for the 76th Locarno Film Festival, taking place from August 2nd to 12th, 2023.
This year’s selection of 17 titles, all world premieres and one as an international premiere, will be competing for the Pardo d’oro. The Concorso Cineasti del presente selection, dedicated to discovering the cinema of tomorrow, comprises 15 films: first and second features, all world premieres.
Giona A. Nazzaro, artistic director of the Locarno Film Festival commented – “From Quentin Dupieux and his edgy surrealism to Lav Diaz. From the sarcastic humor of Radu Jude to the night poetry of Sylvain Georges. From the mad inventions of Rainer Sarnet to the abstract psychedelia of Eduardo Williams. From the bittersweet comedy of Bob Byington to the Italian revelation of Simone Bozzelli. From the debut of Leonor Teles to the dreams of Ena Sendijarević. From the ominous and dark Tehran of Ali Ahmadzadeh to the tourist resorts of Sofia Exarchou. Not to forget Dani Rosenberg’s praise of desertion and Annarita Zambrano’s extravagant anarchy. And again, the voices of brand-new women such as Laura Ferrés and the Ukrainian Maryna Vroda, who has finally made it to feature film. Switzerland is represented by Basil Da Cunha, one of the most original voices, protagonist of the renewal of Swiss cinema. The world in all its expressions and manifestations is present in the Locarno selection. And therefore, cinema and all its possibilities. All still to be discovered.”

Premio Cinema Ticino to Mohammed Soudani
The Premio Cinema Ticino, given biannually, is intended to honor the work of an individual or company that has made a distinctive contribution to cinema and with Ticino connections, whether by birth, having had a working base or having lived here for at least five years, or someone born in the Canton of Ticino but working elsewhere. The 30,000 CHF prize, launched in 2009 by the Ticino Council of State in collaboration with the Locarno Film Festival, is funded via the Swisslos fund. Retrospective
This year’s Retrospective is dedicated to a season of classical Mexican cinema, featuring many works rarely if ever screened beyond the nation’s borders.
Guillermo Del Toro, Alfonso Cuarón and Alejandro González Iñárritu are only a few of the leading lights to make up the global reputation of Mexican cinema today. The visionary gaze of this filmmaking generation is rooted in a rich tradition of popular cinema, as beloved at home as it is little known and studied abroad, and to which the Locarno Film Festival will pay tribute during its upcoming edition (August 2 – 12, 2023)
“Espectáculo a diario – Las distintas temporadas del cine popular mexicano” (Spectacle Every Day – The Many Seasons of Mexican Popular Cinema) will be an in-depth exploration of film production in Mexico from the 1940s to the 1960s, three decades of exceptional creativity populated by screen gods and goddess and extraordinary filmmakers that have inspired subsequent generations of moviegoers. This second Retrospective of the Locarno Film Festival dedicated to Mexican cinema – the first was screened in 1957 – will showcase works by Roberto Gavaldón, Alejandro Galindo, Chano Urueta, Matilde Landeta, Juan Bustillo Oro, Tito Davison, Emilio Fernández, Gilberto Martinez Solares, René Cardona as well as many others.
The Retrospective, curated by film critic Olaf Möller, with the participation of film critic Roberto Turigliatto, is organized by the Locarno Film Festival in collaboration with the Retrospective’s official partners, the Cinémathèque Suisse and MUBI. The Retrospective is made possible by the generous support of major film institutions in Mexico, starting with the Filmoteca UNAM, the Instituto Mexicano de Cinematografía (IMCINE), the Cineteca Nacional México, Permanencia Voluntaria archivo cinematográfico and others.
