American Fiction, Origin and The Color Purple lead the winners of the 15th annual African American Film Critics Association (AAFCA) Awards honoring outstanding achievement in film.

Origin was named Best Drama, along with Best Director for Ava DuVernay and Best Actress for Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor.

American Fiction won Best Comedy along with Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actor for Sterling K. Brown and Emerging Filmmaker for Cord Jefferson.

Other top film awards went to A Thousand and One for Best Independent Feature, Best Documentary went to Stamped From The Beginning, Best International Film went to Io Capitano and Best Short Film went to The After.

“It’s become a tradition to announce our winners on MLK Day,” stated AAFCA president and co-founder Gil Robertson. “And what a great year for cinema showcasing the vibrant tapestry of Black storytelling, where diversity is not a trend, but an imperative. This year’s winners have inspired, challenged, and moved us and we are delighted to celebrate them and their cultural impact.”

Winners will be celebrated at the 15th Annual AAFCA Awards on Feb. 21 at the Beverly Wilshire, a Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.
