The Color Purple dominated the motion picture category of the 55th NAACP Image Awards, winning multiple awards including the top honor of Outstanding Motion Picture along with Outstanding Actress for Fantasia Barrino, Outstanding Supporting Actress for Taraji P. Henson, and Outstanding Ensemble Cast. Outstanding Actor went to co-star Colman Domingo for his performance in Rustin.

Other top honors went to Cord Jefferson for Outstanding Writing for American Fiction, and Ava DuVernay won Outstanding Directing for Origin.

Films taking home trophies include Invisible Beauty for Outstanding Documentary (Film); and Brother won Outstanding Independent Motion Picture.
