Coup de chance

Woody Allen’s latest film Coup de chance, the romantic thriller shot in France, stars, Lou de Laâge (International Emmy winner, The Mad Women’s Ball), Valérie Lemercier (The Visitors, Aline), Melvil Poupaud, (One Fine Morning), Niels Schneider (Heartbeats, How I Killed My Mother).

Translated as “stroke of luck,” Coup de chance, Allen’s 50th film as director, world premiered at Venice Film Festival, and will be released in select theaters on April 5th, 2024 followed by a nationwide digital/VOD release on April 12th.

Coup de chance is about the important role chance and luck play in our lives.

Fanny (Lou de Laâge) and Jean (Melvil Poupaud) look like the ideal married couple – they’re both professionally accomplished, they live in a gorgeous apartment in an exclusive neighborhood of Paris, and they seem to be in love just as much as they were when they first met. But when Fanny accidentally bumps into Alain (Niels Schneider), a former high school classmate, she’s swept off her feet. They soon see each other again and get closer and closer…

Variety review called the film ‘his best movie since “Blue Jasmine”’ writing, “The title of “Coup de Chance” means “Stroke of Luck,” and it refers to the theme of luck that snakes its way through the movie. Alain keeps insisting that all of life is luck. Jean says that there is no luck, that we make our own. The truth lies somewhere in between. And the way this plays out in the movie is absorbing, thrilling, and cheekily satisfying. The question that must now be asked is: Will Woody Allen get lucky with “Coup de Chance”? He has made what is easily his best movie since “Blue Jasmine” (10 years ago), maybe since “Match Point” (18 years ago). It’s his 50th feature, and he is saying it may be his last. Should it be released in America? As a culture, I wouldn’t be too surprised if we found ourselves debating whether the time has come to give Woody Allen, as a filmmaker, another coup de chance.”
