Neon debuted the official trailer for Stress Positions, the indie comedy film set during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic in Brooklyn.

Qaher Harhash stars as a Moroccan American young man named Bahlul recovering from a broken leg while quarantining with his uncle played by John Early.

Also starring in the film are Theda Hammel, Amy Zimmer, Faheem Ali, Rebecca F. Wright, Davidson Obennebo, Elizabeth Dement and John Roberts.

Release Date

Directed by Theda Hammel, Stress Positions world premiered at the 2024 Sundance Film Festival, and opens in New York at the IFC Center on April 19th, then expands April 26th in Los Angeles and additional select cities.

Synopsis

Terry Goon (John Early) is keeping strict quarantine in his ex-husband’s Brooklyn brownstone while caring for his nephew Bahlul, a 19-year-old model from Morocco, bedridden after an electric scooter accident. Unfortunately for Terry, everyone in his life wants to meet the model. The whole pack of them including his reckless and outspoken best friend Karla descend on the dilapidated house, crowding the model, breaking Terry’s cherished rules, and putting his barely formed political convictions to the test.

Review

Variety review called the film a ‘hilarious pandemic comedy’ saying, “Throughout, Hammel proves a sharp humorist fixated on showcasing and satirizing annoying, ignorant people. These characters hate everyone starting with themselves. They are completely clueless while thinking they are the smartest; everyone who is not them is awful and the butt of jokes. Time and time again, they reveal how socially, politically and geographically illiterate they are. In real life, anyone would hate to spend even a few minutes in their company. Yet in Hammel’s hands, they become easy to enjoy and laugh at while completely understanding their full awful personalities.”
