Ahead of the US premiere at Tribeca Film Festival, Variance Films shared the official trailer for The Adults, the indie comedy drama film starring Michael Cera as Eric, who travels trip back home to visit his family, but finds himself balancing the relationship with his sisters and his addiction to a local poker game. Also starring in the film are Hannah Gross, Sophia Lillis, Wavyy Jonez, Anoop Desai, Kyra Tantao, Kiah McKirnan, and Simon Kim.

Directed by Dustin Guy Defa, The Adults world premiered at the 2023 Berlin Film Festival, where it was nominated for the Encounter Award; and will open in theaters with a release date of August 18th, 2023.

The Adults follows Eric (Michael Cera) as he returns home for a very short visit and finds himself caught between reuniting with his sisters and chasing a victory with his old poker group. As the trip extends, Eric finds it increasingly difficult to avoid confrontations and revelations as his carefully constructed façade of his adulthood gives way to old childhood conflicts. While Maggie (Sophia Lillis) attempts to recreate the intimate world the three of them once shared, Eric and Rachel (Hannah Gross) are faced with the divide between their childhood selves and the adults that they are now.

The reviews have been fairly lukewarm, with Variety writing, “With its flatly prosaic visual language and preponderance of brittle, tentative silences, “The Adults” gives viewers ample room to imagine what brought these once eccentrically connected siblings to this unhappy point — be it some specifically loaded source of trauma or just everyday personal drift. There’s some dead air in the filmmaking here, though it doesn’t feel overly generous to match that to the characters’ own stifled sense of internal stasis, an extended wait for a life cue that may never come. It’s something they don’t quite realize (or are too stubborn to admit) they still have in common.”
