Mzia Arabuli in Levan Akin’s Crossing
Mzia Arabuli in Levan Akin’s Crossing © Haydar Tastan

Levan Akin’s film Crossing will open the 2024 Panorama program of 74th Berlin International Film Festival, set to showcase 31 titles from 36 countries. The Panorama program includes new works by André Téchiné, Thomas Arslan, Birgitte Stærmose, David-Pierre Fila, Annie Baker, Dag Johan Haugerud, Bruce LaBruce and Nathan Silver. Also in the program is the four-part anthology series Zeit Verbrechen.

In Crossing, an unlikely duo travels from Batumi, Georgia to the urban, labyrinthine Istanbul in search of a young trans* woman named Tekla. In this, his fourth feature, Levan Akin creates a topography of places that offer queer people comfort and solidarity while movingly connecting reality with imagination. In Les gens d’à côté (My New Friends) by French master André Téchiné with Isabelle Huppert in the leading role, neighbours with opposing world views risk taking significant steps towards conciliation.

The Generation 14plus competition opens with the world premiere of Sasha Nathwani’s feature film debut Last Swim, which revolves around one day and night in the life of a young British-Iranian woman on the verge of completing her A-levels. While awaiting the results of her exams, the ambitious teenager grapples with the consequences of a life-changing diagnosis. The film combines an authentic look at contemporary London with the portrait of a young woman who must reassess her dreams and relationships.

The opening film for the 2024 edition of Generation Kplus is Sieger Sein (Winners) by Soleen Yusef. Brimming with wit and charm, the director’s second fiction feature follows an eleven-year-old Kurdish refugee girl with a passion for football as she negotiates her complicated everyday school life in Berlin’s Wedding district. The two opening films share an unflinching attitude to facing challenges and trauma, but also a hopeful energy and desire to celebrate life in all its fragility.

Nine feature-length films, including five world premieres, and ten short films, round off the Generation program. 30 films from 30 countries make up the main program of the 54th Forum and the 19th edition of Forum Expanded presents 21 cinematic works from 21 countries.
